Sun WL and H-alpha FD 17th January 2022

Post by Radon86 »

Hi All,
I was going to try focal reducing my Quark today but failed to do so. I managed to get some images (about 11 panes) and get a mosaic. I did not use my tilt adaptor. I have some Newton rings which I have not bothered to deal with, they did not subtract with flats. I used SharpCap. Just a quick process. White light with Baader filter. I took series of images and processed it in AS!3, not yet examined to see if there was any flaring or whether it is worth trying a time lapse image with it.

The seeing was average I thought, I am assembling the parts for my DIY SSM, hopefully it will be operational later this year !!

One thing I did do was put in a 35nm Baader 2 inch filter H-alpha and the improvement in visual seeing was obvious. However I did not use it for imaging. Maybe next time. Maybe I will find the solution to the focal reducer dilemma.

Having seen some of the incredible pictures from Nigella, Mark, and Pedro, I feel a bit silly posting these images.

Thanks for looking,
Magnus

Magnus,
Despite the newton rings, your Ha image compares will to those of the GONG network of instruments on the details shown. That's not bad at all! And I really like the white light image. It agrees well with my visual views today that I have yet to post.

Well done I say....

James

Very nice images Magnus!

11 pane mosaic is not an easy task!

I'm using 35nm Baader H-alpha filters in front of my setups as well - both with my DayStar Quark and for Coronado telescopes.

Best regards,
Arne

Hi Arne,

After months ? year, I did buy the Baader 35nm 2 inch filter but it was not easy to find. There was the option of buying the latest CCD version which is much more expensive. Visually it seemed to improve the image, so probably imaging should show significant improvements. I hope so anyway. Yes, mosaicing - ? I was very precisely polar aligned from the previous day so there was no movement of the sun at all in the videos. So you ensure your camera is rotated at the angle so that the sun moves mostly horizontal or vertical depending on the hand control arrows. I think Firecapture is slightly easier to use and I have plans to use a focal reducer...
