January 17 2022 Observations. Snowlar Session!

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Session time is from 17:45 until 18:26 UTC. The skies are mostly clear with well below average seeing. The temperature is a cold 30F ( -1.1C ) Breezy.

Coronado SolarMax II 60 DS. 16x and 25x ( Ha )
I can see six areas of activity in the Ha chromosphere today. AR12927 is easily visible in the SW quadrant as a single spot with plage east of it. A thin snakelike filament is visible just east of the plage. AR12933 is visible east of AR12927. I can see a small spot with plage SE of it. A small filament lies to it's NW. A large easy triple-filament is visible south of the AR12927-33 complexes. AR12929 is visible in the NW quadrant as two spots amid plage. North of it lies AR12930. Spots lie at it's SW end. The plage trails NE of the spots. GONG CT shows the plage as double. Seeing does not allow me to see this clearly and I can't use a higher magnification for a closer look :-( . I can see a filament just NE of this system. AR12932 lies in the NE quadrant and is visible as a double-plage. I can see a filament between AR12930 and AR12932. South of AR12932 in the SE quadrant lies a barely visible disturbance. It's just a mere ruffling in the mottled pattern of the chromosphere.

A number of filaments can be seen scattered around the disc including the previous mentioned ones. I can see all the prominences seen on the GONG CT images. GONG shows a connected loop on the SW limb but I cannot see the connection. It looks like two faint horns. The SE limb also shows a small double prominence.

The mottles are soft but still can be easily seen.

Orion 70mm Solar Telescope. 25x and 41.5x ( WL )
I can see seven disturbances on the WL photosphere today. I can see some faculae in the far SW quadrant. It's what remains of AR12925. SDO HMIc imagery shows a very tiny pore there but I cannot see it. NE of AR12925 but still in the SW quadrant lies a single small spot marking the position of AR12927. At 41.5x I can barely see a penumbra surrounding a tiny umbra. East of this spot lies a close double spot(s) with some SE trailing pores. This is associated with AR12933. 41.5x shows that the double spots show umbra/penumbra structure. The NW quadrant shows two nice spot systems. The southernmost of these is AR12929. It appears as as a double spot showing penumbra and umbra in both spots. There is a " lump " of penumbra on the NW side of the easternmost spot. North of AR12929 lies the spot group of AR12930. I see is as three east-west oriented spots that have penumbra. The umbra to the middle one is tiny and hard to see unlike the other two. I can see two pores with a close look north and northwest of the easternmost spot. The NE quadrant shows two patches of faculae. The one nearest the limb is a bit easier to see. SDO HMI continuum imagery shows a single pore in the innermost one, the one more away from the limb ( AR12932 ). I never could see it. I looked for faculae in the SE quadrant but seen none there. SDO HMIc does show some there but nothing significant.

I can only barely hint the fine solar granulation today.

Let it snow! Let it snow! Let it snow!! ❄️

James

Thanks Mark. Right after the session I cleared most of the driveway of snow. I have to finish it and clear the back walk. Shoveling snow is too much like work!

James, what a beautiful view!!! Great session and great description. There is really a lot of snow. Be careful when clearing snow, take care of your back.

Ivan,
I am observing now. The Sun is showing quite a bit of detail, especially in Ha. " Snowlar " sessions are probably more common for you than for me. Afterwards I have to finish shoveling the rest of the driveway and the back walk and deck. Not fun. :-(

Blessings,

James

It's great that you are now watching, it's already evening with us and the Sun has set 4.5 hours ago.

Snow removal is very hard work, especially if the snow is wet and heavy. I know this firsthand, and would not joke about it. Two years ago, a colleague of mine injured his back while clearing his parents' yard. I also went to the doctor a couple of times after such exercises. I want to quickly clear the yard, collect more snow in a shovel, and this is where the cleaning ends :(

That's why I don't like winter, too much snow, too cold and not enough sun.

Ivan

Ivan,
And this shoveling gets harder the older one gets. I work, rest and then repeat.

I caught an M-Class flare a little while ago. I will post the observations sometime later this afternoon. I have to finish this shoveling first. :-(

I wish it would snow, at least for a couple of days :hamster:

Thanks for the observations James!
