January 19 2022 Observations. New spot near SE limb!

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Session time is from 17:15 to 17:51 UTC. Clearing skies. The temperature is 53F ( 11.6C )

Coronado SolarMax II 60 DS. 16x and 25x ( Ha )
I can see eight active regions/plage/disturbances in the Ha chromosphere today! The easiest to see is AR12933 in the SE quadrant. It is visible as a plage with a filament to it's NW. AR12927 is immediately to it's west and is visible as a thin long plage with a filament just to it's east. A nice easy dark filament lies well south of AR12927-33. AR12929 and AR12930 are now in the far west in the NW quadrant nearing the limb. Their plages are still visible though. Their spots are visible with a close look and the plage of AR12930 trails off to the NE. AR12932 is visible without too much difficulty as a scattered plage nearing the CLM in the NE quadrant. To it's SE lies another visible disturbed area. The SE quadrant shows yet another disturbance near the limb and west of this nearing the Central Longitudinal Meridian is another scattered plage. Easily seen on GONG imagery but more difficult visually.

Filaments are numerous and scattered arounfd the disc. The NW quadrant shows them in the greatest number. I can also see a decent one near the SSE limb.

I can see a few prominences on the SE and SW limb. The most prominent and noteworthy is one on the SE limb which looks detached and projects northward.

The mottles are easily seen across the disc today.

Orion 70mm Solar Telescope. 25x ( WL )
I can see six disturbances/active regions on the WL photosphere today. 5 of these bear spots. AR12933 in the SW I see as a single spot hinting it's penumbra. West of AR12933 I see AR12927 as a single spot surrounded by faint faculae. I see two bipolar spot groups in the NW quadrant. AR12929 is visible as two spots with visible penumbrae with a close look. Faculae can be seen surrounding them as well. AR12930 to their north is visible first as two spots showing their penumbrae around their tiny umbrae in the midst of faculae. A close look shows a more difficult spot between the primary pair. I can see a patch of faculae in the far NE near the limb. The SE quadrant shows another patch of faculae just off the limb. SDO continuum images tipped me off to a spot emerging from behind the limb there. It took a close look but I could see it! I am not sure if it's connected magnetically to the faculae just to the west of it or not.

I actually observed from just inside the house today with the scope stuck out past the sliding glass door!

Carpe Lumen!

James

Good luck on that Mark. It looks like I will be under clouds tomorrow. Possibly more snow!

Thanks for the detailed report, James. We have clouds again. It's a pity you're clouded today too.

James,
our sky today is very similar to yours. It is a pity that today you are without the Sun.
My wife said today is National Hugging Day so I give everyone a virtual hug and wish everyone well.
