Sun dogs are usually located at right angles on either side of the sun. This looks like a ray from the sun shining through the atmosphere after the sun has set. I can't remember what they are called.

Looks like crepescular rays coming from the sun that is below the horizon, i've seen this a few times over the sea in Iceland before now.

Hi

I had an odd sunset sight. Looking north I could see what looked like a red rainbow. I assume it was a partial bow just getting red light from the setting Sun.

Cheers. Andrew.

Thanks all. I'll go with crepescular rays.

Andrew, sounds lovely...I've not seen such a sight.

Thanks, Andrew! Beautiful. I have indeed seen those and even double and triple....this one is strikingly red and broadly diffused.

And I just like saying, "crepescular!". If I say it three times in a row and tap my shoes together I get transported to Kansas.

As Mark has said, Crepuscular Rays are the nearest to your image, albeit your image isn't showing those too well, rather I suspect that the recent big Tonga Volcano eruption could be the cause of the redness in yours and Andrew's pics (depending on where you live from any downwind of that huge blast-site.

These are fairly common events..

Hi

My picture is from November.

Visually it looked reddish but there are hints of other colours in the image.

Cheers. Andrew.

As it was at sunset, to the left, the light making up the rainbow seems to be mainly red sunset light.

Cheers. Andrew.
