Solar Animation Tutorial (June 2020)

Post by Carbon60 »

There are various ways of doing solar animations and there are already a few excellent tutorials on SolarChat. Here's another option that I use, employing AS!3, ImPPG and GIMP applications that are all free to download.

I'm sure that some of you will have other tricks and tips to share, but for anyone new to this I hope you find my approach to be of some guidance, along with the other methods on this site.

If you try this, please let me know if I've missed any important steps or made any glaring errors so that I can correct accordingly :)

Thanks.

Stu.

Great tutorial, Stu!

As for coloring the whole animation in GIMP, I've read there are scripts to automate it (i.e apply Curves/other operations to all layers), but haven't got around to trying it.

I noticed you have "CPU + bitmaps" mode enabled in your ImPPG screenshot. Do you get an error message or graphical artifacts when using GPU/OpenGL mode? If so, updating the graphics driver should help.

My software:
Stackistry — an open-source cross-platform image stacker
ImPPG — stack post-processing and animation alignment

Thanks, Stu.

Also, I somehow always managed to overlook the batch processing option in ImPPG

Hi,
No problem running in either mode (no error messages), but I find in GPU mode the image has 'lower resolution' than in CPU+bitmaps mode, as shown in the examples below (magnified views of identically processed Ca K image). Are the features visible in the GPU image the graphical artifacts you mention?

I haven't seen this one before, but yes, it looks like the cubic interpolation shader isn't executing exactly how it should on your setup. I'm guessing the saved processed images look the same though for both back ends? Could you send me the stack and ImPPG settings file so I can check on my system?
