Solar Talk - Monday 23rd November 19.30UT

Post by marktownley »

Hi All,

I will be doing my talk 'Cycles on the Sun: Space Weather and the Earth Sun Environment' on monday evening at 7.30pm at my local astronomical society (well, virtually!). Normally they charge non members to watch them, however the committee has agreed they will stream it for free as part of National Astronomy Week ;)

I'll be talking via youtube live for about an hour with slides etc, then there will be a zoom session afterwards for Q&A and discussion. Would be great to see as many of you as possible there if you can make it.

Excellent, Mark. Thanks for the heads-up. I'll certainly aim to 'be there'.

Good luck and I hope all goes well. Maybe you'll create some additional solar converts.

Mark,
You did an outstanding presentation here! Wonderful! You should have been a teacher. I started out back in the late 1970's and early 80's drawing and notebook recording my white-light observations using 50mm and 60mm refractors and those little eyepiece solar filters and later projection. I would take an instamatic camera and photograph the images. I still have my old notebooks and the 60mm refractor! Living at 35 degrees north latitude I have seen an aurora only once in my life. Back around 1980-81. It was in the north and was not green but red!

If I understand radiation exposure right, cosmic rays are worse at minimum. Our atmosphere shrinks lowering protection against them and the sun is less active to " push them away " and it's heliosphere is smaller. Cosmic rays are LOWER during maximum but solar radiation is higher forcing planes to a lower altitude during CME events. Cosmic rays of course do not originate from the Sun but are from events far outside the solar system.

And I had no idea the sun had belts. That explains why we see the southern hemisphere coming alive now and it explains the double-peaks on the activity graphs.

I wish for more activity but certainly not a Carrington-Class event. I bet it would short out our computers, including the ones in our cars out too. And think, we would be hand driving our mounts, lol, I do that anyway, after the power went out. But that would be the least of our problems....

Thanks again Mark. Awesome presentation!!

James
