January 1st 2016 G2 Geomagnetic Storm

Post by Carbon60 »

Hi all,

After a short break my magnetometer is back up and running, just in time for nature's firework display overnight bringing in the New Year with a G2 geomagnetic storm (Kp6).

No chance of seeing the Aurora myself because of light pollution and a cluttered northern horizon (and clouds!!), although these are not a problem for my magnetometer, of course.

Happy New Year everyone.

Good capture Stu! I was 'out and about' round relatives last night for the new year and they had a low northern horizon (certainly compared to mine), alas all I could see was a see of light pollution in front of me with a low band of smog caused by all the fireworks that were going off.

Very similar results here Stu - nice to see our instruments still compare fairly well although I think I have a little 'thermal creep' going on in the background :-)

Thanks Mark, Derek & Mike.

Glad to see you're still up and running, Mike. Yes, it looks like thermal drift (tricky with the changing ambient temps this time of year) but at least all the details look to be consistent between data sets.

Yes, it still amazes me that I get this drift when the bat detector is wrapped in bubble-wrap inside an insulated coolbox which is heated and thermostatically controlled to +/- 0.5 degrees C; and the whole lot is then wrapped in a duvet and placed in a room where the temperature only changes by about +/- 4 degrees over a 24 hour cycle. It seems that anything more than a 0.3 degree change will distort the reading :o
