X9.3 Flare Geomagnetic Effect

Post by Carbon60 »

Solar flares in themselves usually have an imperceptible effect on our geomagnetic environment as measured with standard magnetometers. Coronal mass ejections that often accompany them, when Earth directed, usually do, but the effect is delayed usually by a few days as the plasma mass transits from the Sun to the Earth.

Yesterday was different. The highly energetic X9.3 solar flare at AR2673 produced so much UV output that the geomagnetic environment was instantly (temporarily) transformed. No delay here (except the usual 8 minutes) as the UV blast sped across the void at 300,000 km/s, days ahead of the CME produced as AR2673 erupted.

It's unusual to detect the geomagnetic effects of flares, which is a testimony to the extreme power of this event.

Here are the data from my hi-res (1 second cadence) magnetometer:

What an incredible capture, Stu! I always thought it was just charged particle flux that messed with the magnetosphere. This UV effect is amazing!

Cheers.
Peter.

It is amazing how UV can effect the ionosphere, the electrical current sheet and, consequently, the magnetic field.

Thanks for your interest, Peter.

Superb to see! I've been struggling with time lately to catch up with matters solar.
