More geomagnetic activity 16th March 2018-Updated 19th

Post by Carbon60 »

A second wave of solar wind has arrived, sparking beautiful aurora and twitching magnetometers around the globe.

Here are my data from 14th to 16th March showing the two events as they unfolded here in the UK.

Hopefully some of you might have seen the resulting fireworks.

Great to see Stu, I didn't know we had an event. It has been all cloudy here anyway so your magnetometer is always a better bet :hamster:

There's further geomagnetic unrest as Earth penetrates deeper into fast flowing solar wind. Occasional intermittent southerly directed magnetic fields embedded within the plasma, as illustrated with reference to the attached NOAA data (when Bz goes negative), give a further kick to the potency of the storm.

Very interesting! I notice Pete Lawrence posted pictures from his last Aurora flight of the year last night and they saw 'Steve'. He had some super images of it.

Many thanks Alexandra & Mark. :)

I’m thinking of going on one of Peter’s flights next March, Alexandra. It seems to be about the best time to see some activity, especially if there’s some negative Bz ;)

Great article on Spaceweather Stu http://spaceweather.com/archive.php?vie ... &year=2018

You should do a talk on the flight and get a free ride ;)
