G3 solar storm- Magnetometer response 25th-26th Aug 2018_Updated

Earth is passing through the wake of a CME with a strong southerly directed magnetic field. Overnight his produced a strong response on my magnetometer located here in the NW of England, as it did in other parts of the world and also on Carl's magnetometer as detailed in his post.

I've plotted my hi-res data for a change, captured at 1s cadence plus a 'rate of change' plot. Both clearly show when earth entered the wind stream. The wind gave rise to a G3 storm with a planetary 'K' index of 7, meaning that aurorae were visible at latitudes much lower than usual.

The previous chart was captured mid-way through the event. Here's the event in full. I've also plotted professional data captured by a station in France (Chambon la Foret- part of the 'Intermagnet' network) as a point of reference.

It would appear that this concludes the impact of the wake of the CME. Up next should be some further geomagnetic unrest from a coronal hole later this week.

Thanks for looking.

Excellent Stuart, I received lots of alerts during the day on the 26th which is no good for aurora watching but I hoped you would be capturing it. It was raining constantly anyway so you have a far superior way of watching these events :bow

Good record Stu!

It was cloudy up here on the saturday night, but sunday night was clear so I was ready and waiting:

I initially saw some arcs to the north as the sky was going dark, but these turned out to be cloud

I took a few shots of this and went back inside to inspect in the warmth as temperature was hovering around freezing, but then glanced up out of the window and bingo! There's the aurora... I raced outside and framed up:

Things were looking good! I wanted the Defender in shot, but this meant I was getting traffic from the road, which was annoying!

So a nudge on the tripod

And one final nudge before those pesky headlights were out of shot. Then a run of 134 frames, 20s each, iso800 10mm f4 on the 350D, soover about 45 minutes.

The cloud was rolling in, and this brief burst of activity looks like it was pretty much it for the night looking at the kP index data.

However heading back in and old moonface who was hugging the southern horizon was putting on a nice halo display, so, 9 minutes in his company

Also fits in quite nicely with what halosim was showing...

Weather has since turned to winter with snow on the mountains, but clear skies later in the week mean I will be keeping an eye out!

Great data recording, Stu. The match with Chambon la Foret is amazing.

Mark, your pictorial follow up is awesome. Seems like your trip is going well.

Cheers, Peter.

Fantastic set of animations Mark. Looks like it was quite a short burst of activity that night. I hope you get some more clear skies.

Thanks folks, the burst was about 15 minutes by eye, a little longer in the camera. Clear skies forecast tonight, all the batteries are charged ready!
