New Geomagnetic Storm Arrives 4th Jan 2019

Hi all,

Anyone following the various space weather reports will have known that a geomagnetic storm was predicted for Jan 4th/5th. Sure enough, it HAS arrived, sparking beautiful aurora overnight. My repaired magnetometer (thankfully) recorded the event, which started at 21:46 UT on the 4th and is still continuing as we enter deeper into the solar wind stream. A good night for aurora chasers, maybe, assuming that the activity remains. It really depends on the orientation of the magnetic field held within the flowing plasma.

Good catch Stu! I had a number of alerts on my phone but we're sat under grey skies typically. Glad the magnetometer is up and running again.

Hi Stuart...

Great to see the readings you captured for the storm. Lots of cloud cover so no chance to catch a glimpse of any activity had it occurred.
