Currently there isn't a whole lot of solar activity, as we know, but occasional large coronal holes do come around and their influence can be detected here on Earth using magnetometers that respond to geomagnetic unrest.
Recent geomagnetic activity from a stream of fast flowing solar wind erupting from a coronal hole in the Sun's outer atmosphere sparked aurora around the poles and moved magnetometer 'needles' accordingly. Actually few use needles anymore and instead we rely on highly sensitive magnetic sensors connected to computers that monitor the tiniest changes in local magnetic fields at the sub-nano Teslar level.
Here are my data from over the past 2.5 days that show how my local magnetic field here in the NW of England responded to a pulse of magnetically energised plasma as Earth passed through the wind stream.
Nothing spectacular this time, but there appears to be some activity on the far side of the Sun (old AR2738) which might throw something our way in the form of a CME when it comes around (hopefully) in the next few days. We'll see.
Thanks for looking.
Stu.

Thanks, Alexandra. Slim pickings all around at the moment. Maybe AR12740 will throw up something interesting this time around.
