I thought it would be interesting to compare the frequency and intensity of geomagnetic storms over the past three years, as indicated on my home brew magnetometer, as we continue to progress through solar minimum. I selected May, June and July for each of the years as they fall between the equinoxes, which are known to be particularly sensitive to the influence of the solar wind.
The 'rate of change' of magnetic declination is plotted here as a function of time over the three months for 2017, 2018 and 2019
The data clearly show a much reduced level of geomagnetic activity this year compared with the last two years, as we would expect, given the declining population of active regions. There are still coronal holes opening up, releasing fast flowing solar wind and creating aurora, but even these seem to be less frequent and less geoeffective this year, as the data show.
Further confirmation (as if any were needed) that we're in midst of solar minimum!
