Re: anyone know about this guy
Hi John,
Only through what I’ve read about him on the internet, but what a lovely man. Someone we would call a British Eccentric, meant in the kindest of ways. His ingenious spectrohelioscope is a beautiful example of what I would call ‘rustic engineering’ with its bits of wood, bent metal, string and pulleys, but totally functional. Wonderful.
Thanks for sharing this snippet.

Re: anyone know about this guy
Hello All, I had the privilege of using the Spectrhelioscope when Mr Hatfield was still with us, it was one of the things that made me take up Solar viewing! This was a very clever construction from many bits left over from the war etc.and eventually led to me having an 4” F 22 ERF LENS made by the famous optician David Sinden ,a customer of my firm, which I used with a Thousand Oaks etalon tuner ,for some years visually, and in the 1980s and which went eventually abroad to an observatory not sure where.
I now only have a 90mm F10 PST modded scope on a Zeiss manual mount. John.

Re: anyone know about this guy
It would be interesting to know how the images from the spectrohelioscope compared with the 90mm PST mod. I used to read about Spectrohelioscopes and solar telescopes in the ATM series of 3 books. I never got any further than a home made, solar spectroscope at the time. It was half a century more before I finally saw prominences in H-a with my own eyes through yet another home-made contraption. A 150/8 PST mod. The clarity of the proms was like looking at the backlit smoke off a bonfire from just across the garden! Utterly amazing! Those just starting out today have a huge technological advantage. Instant gratification! ;-)

What an amazing man, how on Earth did he build that, he must have been so clever. I wish I could come and visit it like he said, but I wonder if it is still in existence or whether the vandals in his house have done their work. It would be a great pity if it wasn't in a museum.
