Last night saw an outburst of auroral activity around the poles. The cause was a burst of southerly oriented, erratic and geo-effective interplanetary magnetic field carried by plasma arising from a coronal hole and a possible co-rotating interaction between ejected solar plasma from our rotating Sun (looking much like the swirly pattern observed from a rotating garden sprinkler).
Our local magnetic field has been very quite in recent days, almost flatlining, making this event more impactful as can be seen on my magnetometer data collected from my back garden here in the North-West of England.
Earth remains inside the flow for now although the event is unlikely to escalate and things appear to be quietening again.
Thanks for looking.
Stu.

Re: Geomagnetic Unrest 16th November 2021
Very exciting Stuart
I had to go back and look at the scales compared to the last one and you used 15 up and -15 down and they spanned around 10 each way. I just wanted to get a scale comparison between this one and the last. I guess if you put them all together like you do at the end of the year we see the magnitude in comparison. Great stuff!!

Re: Geomagnetic Unrest 16th November 2021
Hi Alexandra,
Thanks. Yes, the previous event was particularly 'energetic' and I had to change the scale to capture all the action. As you say, there will be a summary at the end of the year to show everything relative to everything else.
Here's the event shown above in full. Looks like things are settling down again, until the next time
Stu.
