LS80 Etalon @ a 130mm f/7 Triplet
LS80 Etalon @ a 130mm f/7 Triplet
Hello Everybody,
I've been reading through this forum for quite a while now. I'd like to introduce myselfe firsts.
My name is Thomas I'm from Germany and the solar bug has bitten me about a year ago and since then enjoyed white light and h-alpha photography of the sun a lot.
Some of my images:
White light:
H-Alpha:
White light was done mostly done with my C11 and for Ha I use my LS80 B1800 single stack with a ASI 174m.
So finally to my planned project:
I'm looking into getting some more resolution for H-Alpha for the next season.
So I thought about taking the etalon assembly out of the LS80 and put it into a TS 130 Triplet. I thought since both scopes have an f/7 focal ratio It should yield the best results.
Does anybody have experience with the internal ERF of the LS80? Will I need an additional front ERF for the 130mm scope?
How do I determine the optimal distance of the assembly to the front lens?
Can anybody point my too similar (LS80) mods?
Any advice or discussion is very welcome!
CS Thomas

willkommen!
you came to right place
I have ls60 so - i dont know diameter of ls80 etalon-internal-erf - it about 30mm for ls60
the general idea is to match objective cone cutoff to internal erf diameter
im sure others in this forum will post to you

Hi Thomas...
Welcome to the group, and a very god set of images that you have posted.
I have made a modded Ha scope using the DSII etalon for the LS80T and fitted it to a Celestron 150mm, f8 scope. I have a Baader 110mm ERF mounted inside the tube as well.
I did set the LS80T main etalon up as a test on this OTA, and it seemed to work ok...didn't want to loose the opportunity to image with the 80mm to get full disks so I set up the double stack module for the larger scope.

I Brian,
do you have any images that you took with the Celestron and the DSII?
cheers

Hi Thomas...
Sorry for the delay getting back to you.
I have posted a 'best of' 2015 message that includes many images taken with my modded 150mm, f8 Celestron OTA fitted with a Lunt DSII etalon. The last two Ha are likely the best examples in the lot of its performance.
Link to the images:

I can send you a few pic of the modded OTA is you like as well.

Re: LS80 Etalon @ a 130mm f/7 Triplet
Hi Thomas
This should work fine just as Brian has mentioned. See my similar setup in this post: http://solarchat.natca.net/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=18452
In your setup you should get the positioning of DSII so that its aperture window gets as close to the full light cone as possible. Just make sure you don't lose ability to bring system to focus if trying to maximise the matching of light cone to etalon aperture. You can determine etalon positioning by doing a ray trace diagram to see where it achieves a diameter slightly less that 35mm. Alternatively you could disconnect the focuser from where it attaches to the back of the tube and place a piece of paper over the hole whilst pointing at the sun. Mark off the diameter with a pen and see how close it is to 35mm. This would be the approximate size of the light cone at the front part of the etalon window. If you need a bigger disk, then you will need to cut the tube to move things inwards or have an adapter that is recessed into the body of the tube a little bit. If the difference is small you can live it. I expect things will be close in your system.
I use a 125mm front mounted ERF to minimise tube currents and to protect the Lunt's DSII etalon. If you do not have an ERF in front of the Lunt DSII etalon, I believe damage will likely occur!
Other more experienced modders may add or correct my comments and suggestions.

Welcome Thomas your mod sounds similar to what Ted has done and achieved great results .Very nice WL shots look foward to your 2016 results.

Hello Thomas, look my Setup:
TOA130 with LS80 / B1800. I can see the complete Sun Disc with this Setup. I hope in 2 Months i can make complete this with a DSS Modul...
Oh i forget: I am also comming from Germany...

My Name is Andreas, and i am also from Germany....
My Setup is: TOA130 / Baader ERF plus LS80PT / BF 1800 adaptet in the original 4" OAZ from Tak.
I can see the full Sun Disc with this config. For the next my plan is to add a DSS Module on the Back, but i am not sure this time to give the Money for the DSS Module or a CCD Cam like Atik one.....
Taken with Skyris 445 and 3 x Abbe Barlow.

Time to revive this thread...
My mod is finally complete, there is still some tweeking to do but so far I'm quite happy with the result.
- 3x TC and an ASI 174m (will make better flats next time... )
cheers
