There has been relatively little magnetic activity to speak of in recent weeks, but last night all that changed.... a bit. Fast flowing solar wind from a large coronal hole reached Earth in the early hours of Aug 16th, sparking beautiful aurora for those lucky enough to see them. My magnetometer picked up the event by detecting minute changes in Earth's magnetic field as the solar wind roared by at speeds in excess of 500km/s.
In solar storm terms, this was really quite weak, but I'll take it, nevertheless
Thanks for looking
Stu.

Hi Stu.
At last, something to see! Some lovely aurora images on Spaceweather but nothing directly visible to me.
Cheers, Peter.

Re: Finally some magnetic activity Aug 16th 2018
Good record Stu! There was the faintest of activity on Thursday in Reykjavik but nothing worth bothering about. Last night was clear up here in the north, and despite an early night with the best of intentions to get up and check things out slept all the way through and here we are in the light of morning again. Here for a while so will keep looking. Hoping the coronal hole that spaceweather has hitting on 20/21 delivers...

As you say, Mark, we can only hope. I'll keep monitoring and report out what my magnetometer 'sees' over this period.marktownley wrote: ↑Sun Aug 19, 2018 7:26 am Good record Stu!
