Re: PST blocking filter specs.
Bob,
Not sure what you are asking for....
The "original" blocking filter (without the ITF) is 6mm square and has a bandpass centred on Ha of less than 10A.

Hi,Merlin66-
Thanks for your reply.Andover optics wanted to know the specs of the PST blocking filter because I asked them if they can make a custom 10mm BF for the PST so I can unscrew the stock 5mm BF to make more a space around the sun visually.

Re: PST blocking filter specs.
Hi Robert,
Best and cheapest way (custom filters are EXPENSIVE!) is to buy a BF10, unscrew the 10mm element replace this for the 5mm element in the PST and then screw the 5mm element in the blocker body and resell as a BF5 blocker. You will recoup some of your money, would only cost a couple of hundred bucks overall.

Thanks,again,Mark-
I was trolling the waters to see what was available, and as you have stated, the best way is to go your way. Not sure if getting thebf 10 is going to make enough of a difference in visually for the PST for the extra cash.
Best,
Bob

Re: PST blocking filter specs.
That's the trouble! All these Ha systems are uniquely different. My advice would be to see if you can borrow and trial before buy potentially.
What's the sweet spot like in the PST you already have in terms of its placement in the blocking filter? What do you want to achieve?

Hi,Mark-
The sweet spot is just off center and to the right of the visual image. I would like more space around the sun, which would be more aesthetically nicer.

Re: PST blocking filter specs.
I think you would be way better off buying a larger scope with a BF10 or BF15 already in it.

Re: PST blocking filter specs.
Hi,Stephen-
Thanks for your reply! I use a PST DS in tandem with a Quark Chromosphere on a Lunt Engineering 102ED f/7 refractor on a Minitower II and I love this setup, one for full disc, the other for hi-res closeup views. It is near perfec,BUT the small space around the sun is uncomfortable , I had a pre-Meade Coronado 60mm with 2 externally double stacks and it was great with a bf10. Sold it,regretted it,every time I think about it I grind my teeth.Do you have a bf10 you would part with, make a Corleonedealfor me that "I can't refuse".
Thanks or your help, and hope to see you at NEAF 2017 with all your cool toys.
Best,
Bob

Hi Robert,
Andover makes a 12.5mm BF which is used in Daystar Quark Chromosphere and mounted on the front of the telecentric extender. The part number is 659FS02-12.5 it costs $157 . If you want a 25mm diameter of the same they have it for $233. It works perfectly for me with my Quark, Lunt LS50F Ha and PST!

Re: PST blocking filter specs.
Hi Paul,
It is on Andover Corporation website. Daystar doesn't claim that they use this filter, but when you look inside the Quark you find the data on the filter itself.

Re: PST blocking filter specs.
Hi Frank,
thanks for the information on the Quark blocking filter - just what I was looking for! I just checked on the Andover website: I do not find a filter numbered "659FS02-12.5", but "656FS02-12.5" and, more important, it costs $259 (not $157). The 25mm version I find costs $384 (not $233).
Is that just an minor typo and a hefty increase in prices - or am I looking in the wrong place?
Thanks,
Frank

Re: PST blocking filter specs.
You definitely don't want a 659 filter, that's not Ha wavelength!

Re: PST blocking filter specs.
Sure, that's why I suspected a typo in FeroT's post from Feb.22nd - still: 65% increase in prices within ten days sounded strange to me. But maybe that is it.
Re: PST blocking filter specs.
656.3nm Bandpass Filter, FWHM 1nm, 12.5mm dia. 656FS02-12.5 $157 Price is correct! Checked it today!
Re: PST blocking filter specs.
Thanks for checking!
Still puzzling to me: I just checked myself again on the Andover webpage, and again I get $259 for the 12.5mm filter and $384 for the 25mm version (see attachment).
And then I tried the same Andover webpage with a different browser that hides my (german) IP address: Now, surprise, surprise, I see the prices you quoted, i.e. $157 and $233 for exactly the same filters.
So, Andover filters seem to be 65% more expensive when ordering from Europe (?).

Re: PST blocking filter specs.
Yes it could be the case. Maybe they are including the shipping and insurance cost, but I doubt it. This is price politics, unfortunately. That was a reason while I was living in New Zealand to buy a C8 with the mount and take in my luggage during my trip to US to save money. The NZ price was unacceptable.

Useful to know, so the trick would be to order using a browser that blocks the IP addressLTHB wrote: ↑Fri Mar 10, 2017 9:15 am And then I tried the same Andover webpage with a different browser that hides my (german) IP address: Now, surprise, surprise, I see the prices you quoted, i.e. $157 and $233 for exactly the same filters.

They will probably catch you when you enter your shipping address. ;-)
