May 15 H alpha and May 10 CaK

Post by p_zetner »

Hi Everyone.

I should have paid more attention to the weather forecast. The day began with beautiful clear skies (not a cloud in sight) so I began the process of gearing up for an imaging session. I set up the C8 scope and, as the Daystar came to temperature and the Sun cleared the neighbour's tree, started to focus and prepare for recording. I noticed the exposure settings had to be continually nudged up and, removing my head from the shroud (cardboard box), discovered a huge bank of high cirrus rolling in. I quickly managed two videos of AR12741 before the cloud cover became too dense and here is the result. I have to admit, it's not bad considering the haze I had to shoot through. All in all, it was a morning session consisting mostly of setting up, then two quick videos and then taking down!

Equipment: Aries ERF, Celestron C8 Edge, Moonlite CHL focuser, ~f/46 Telecentric, Daystar QPE 0.6A, ~ f/35 FR, PGR USB3 Grasshopper IMX174.

Here is a CaK panorama of ARs 12741/12740 from May 10. I had taken a number of H alpha videos with the C8 then switched to the Stellarvue refractor for the CaK. By this time the seeing was seriously degrading but I shot a number of videos anyway. The big difficulty with the resulting images was stitching them together for a 3-pane mosaic. Both Autostitch and Photomerge balked at the assignment but, ultimately, I managed some success with stitching 2/3 panes in Photomerge and compositing the remaining one by hand.

Equipment: Stellarvue 115mm f7. Chroma 380/ IDAS UV-IR cut, Omega CaK 0.2nm, Lunt CaK B1800 Etalon. (Sys.~f37) PGR USB3 Grasshopper IMX174.

Very nice images, Peter, even if the session was short and sweet. Worth the pain to get the gain.

I've lost count of the times I've set up only to be disappointed with the conditions; blue sky one minute and clouds the next, so it seems.

Really beautiful images Peter! What is your exposure time in CaK?

Nice shots Peter. Even in less than ideal conditions, larger aperture images have a characteristic quality that is appealing. I had to laugh thinking about the many times I had to bump up the exposure. I too had my head in the shrouds.

Sounds like the story of 90% of my sessions :(
However, you got some pics to die for, so that must have made you smile :hamster:

Thanks everyone.

Here I thought the gods of meteorology were just picking on me! A hazard of the hobby, clearly! (Hmmm....”clearly”...)

Bart: I’ve been very lazy about recording my exposure settings lately. The CaK shots are probably around 5ms. I try to keep it as short as possible without boosting camera gain too much. I’ll check next time.

Cheers.
Peter
