Intes 703 for H-alpha, some experiments
Quite some experiments last days. This weekend I tried the Intes M703 for H-alpha. Way much easier to transport into the garden than the long 150mm Skywatcher achromat. The imaging train is way less heavy and the optical quality seems better than that of the 150mm f/8 SW.
Here is how it looks.
Made quite some time ago (out of wood) an "adapter" I could mount on to the Intes. That way the 7 inch Intes can hold the 160mm D-Erf easily. Here is how it looks:

The imaging train from right to left:
- adapter with SCT thread on the fron, PST thread on the back
- PST etalon
- PST tot SCT adapter
- JMI focuser
- Lunt Blocking filter
- ASI290mm.

And the total package:

Three images, first one was Saturday, the other two were made today. On Saturday the seeing was way better, but transparency worse. So longer exposure time. Less images in the stack of the first image, so way more noise.
Today transparency was quite good, shorter exposure time, but a lot more reflections. Interesting to see that where the reflection is, the spicules are sharper. Much room for improvement, but I like where this is going to. It was really easy to see both the spicules / prom and the activity on the sun itself, easier than when using the Skywatcher. And even when I changed the Gamma to maximum, the spicules and proms where clearly visible.
Focussed the Intes so that the focal point was 20 cm behind the first adapter. Have to experiment if that is the right position, considering I use a 160mm Erf on a 7 inch f/10 telescope.

These are great shots Bart! Looks like the Intes is a good scope.

Thanks Mark! And yes, even with the huge central obstruction the quality seems better than with the 150mm SW.marktownley wrote: ↑Mon Jun 03, 2019 5:47 am These are great shots Bart! Looks like the Intes is a good scope.

Beautiful images Bart. nice resolution e details. It seems that you´ve a nice PST etalon too...

Re: Intes 703 for H-alpha, some experiments
Thanks all!
I agree Franco, this could be the end of the 150mm Skywatcher as my H-alpha telescope.
Ronnie, hard to judge if it is a good etalon. I have two, this one seems a bit better than the other one. But the difference is not extreme.

Excellent, Bart. Nice new setup. Lots of fine filamentous details in these images.
