Ha Full Disk 9th June

Post by marktownley »

Sunday morning was frustrating; after low pressure being in charge and two days of torrential rain, overnight saw the back edge of the front passing over, and the infamous 'suckers gap' - a window of better weather before the showers following the cold front rattled in. Normally in this situation and locally to me the showers and clouds normally start firing off around 9.30-10.00am, so, despite being sunday morning I was up and out of bed shortly after 5am and setting up ready to observe. I started off with the 8" HaT and despite the glorious blue skies conditions were awful, and even with the SSM firing the capture I was getting nothing but rubbish. Then from nowhere the clouds started to build around 7am, and a quick look on SAT24 confirmed my window of observation was about to close rapidly. I switched to the SM90 and in the time it took me to do this and fire off 3 captures that was it, clouds returned! Persevering I waited till after 9am but with no breaks in the cloud captures came to an end and I decided to pootle on with the rest of my day.

Still, a full disk is better than nothing and was nice to see the remnants of the active regions from rotations past, I wonder if we will still be able to detect it in a couple of weeks? Taken with the SM90 and 2x cemax barlow along with the FLIR ICX916M camera, be sure to double click to view full size.

Forecast looks awful for the foreseeable, so any more sun gazing is going to be in lucky gaps. Hope conditions are better for you..

Very nice FDs, Mark. I had a little more Sun and some periods of stable seeing here, but only by way of patches of blue between clouds scuttling across the Sun. No rain today... we had enough for the weekend yesterday!

Like Stu said, a very nice full disk, Mark. I also was out today with the HaT and shot some videos through the clouds with the focal reducer. I hope I got something but will only be able to process in the next day or two.

Well done Mark (for getting up at 5am  the dedication) a lovely disc too when viewed up close :bow

Yes it is lovely and clear blue for a Monday morning! Saturday was dire, Sunday started well for 5 minutes then deteriorated and was back to dire again by 4pm. I spent 6 hrs doing my garden instead, I wonder when I might get to test my Grasshopper 3 again? probably in Spain :) Sadly my Grasshopper didn't seem to return, this one has FLIR branding all over it so I guess mine died in the hospital ;)

At least you have your camera back again Alexandra! Thanks for the kind comments everyone. Here's the 'best' I could get from the HaT, rather lacking in the resolution I know the scope is capable of when the seeing obliges...

Thanks Brian, appreciate your kind words. I'm not a fan of it, resolution is loads lower than is possible with 8" aperture. TBH, if i'd used the SM90 and a 3x barlow and then drizzle in AS3 I would have got a similar result I reckon.
