Anybody want to share their unprocessed source AVIs

Post by Starry Jack »

I am trying to practice my processing skills. Does anybody have any source files they would like to share with before and after processing compares?

Best,
Jack

Yes, but they tend to be huge so they can't be posted here, your e-mail wouldn't be large enough and WeTransfer only has a 2GB limit. This is why we don't tend to share source avi / ser files. If you have a solution then please share. My files around 6GB in size ;)

Thank you, Alexandra! If you care to I have created a DropBox folder here: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/9ngoffizliij ... 8r97a?dl=0.

We can use this going forward to post some files if our Mods would like. Since I am posting the link in this forum it takes away security but that could be up to the donor if they worried.

I can also create a private folder and share the URL via PM only with interested parties.

Best,
Jack

We used Dropbox successfully at my work for sharing huge ultrasonic data files with a collaborator. The trick is that someone needs to have a business account to handle the larger file sizes. But it sounds as though Jack has that part handled.

Bruce brings up a good point. I can accept 50 GB files but I only have 38 GB free. So...l will still gladly accept donations up to about 20 GB total of space. My files are typically under a GB.

Yes, i'm fine with it.

250 frames with my 9Mp camera generates about 4Gb per image capture. I don't save them once processed as I run out of hard disk space quickly :D

Thanks, Mark!
The donation door is open...small but effective is what we are looking for with a ‘final result’ link or image. A link or a note of some kind with your processing workflow would be lovely.

Here is the official UPLOAD A PRACTICE FILE link: https://www.dropbox.com/request/tbomXBQiI27dTRqKA28y

Looks like there may be a 2 gig limit per file, but I know there are lots of files out there which meet that limit people could use to practice on. I'll load some myself, but my "befores" and "afters" are rarely as impressive as others in the forum.

Suggestions:
1) Post the raw video and name it with your name and any other important info
2) Post the "final result" image with the same name
3) Post a TXT, PDF, YouTube Link, URL etc. with your acquisition and processing workflow also using the same name

Hope this works and hope it helps the community at large.

Thanks Jack, I won't be home from work until bedtime tonight so I will have to look after work tomorrow or the weekend. All my files are 4.6GB so I will have to search through my archives to see if I have any smaller.

Maybe this can be done via Dropbox or something. I thought .SER files are better as its 16 bit.
AVI files are only 8 bit.

Have you worked out the maximum size of files you can accept via dropbox?
Maybe you can send an empty Memory usb stick with a SAE and postage to a trusted forum member?
I still think you can practice with simple things like Lunar imaging files, so the Sun can be done later after you are more familiar with the programs...

I just uploaded a 7.5 GB file! Go ahead and try some of your uploads. Let's keep the file sizes smaller than that if possible so I can host at least 4 practice files. I suggest AVI only because of file size and universal tool acceptance. I also suggest solar ratherthan lunar because the purpose is to train folks on how close they can get to those awesome solar images that we know successfully post processed into a glorious image of the sun. In concept this excercise is like an artist copying a Rembrandt for practice and learn how close they can get to The Master.

Alexandra,
Thank you for submitting your practice video...it was lovely! I'd love to know what your equipment is. It is a clean video. I took a shot at post-processing and ended up with this:
Alexandra Hart - 021016_092304_lapl4_ap1849 AS3 to REG Wave to GIMP v1.jpg
Alexandra Hart - 021016_092304_lapl4_ap1849 AS3 to REG Wave to GIMP v1.jpg (133.58 KiB) Viewed 3522 times
The exercise was great fun for me and educational. I'd love to see YOUR version of the final product to see how close I came to the Rembrandt.

Best,
Jack

Hello Jack,
Last night I managed to find one in the archive from 2nd October 2016 which was AVI and only 350MB in size. Good job as it took an hour to upload, I can't imagine how long it would take to do 5GB  I am also not sure if we have a upload restriction each month, I know that we have only just gone on to unlimited download. I didn't have the time last night to fill in all the details, I dumped and ran :)

It was a Solarscope DSF100 and Grasshopper 3 camera. By the looks of the title in Flickr it was with a 2x Barlow.

Here is my Flickr image but I am not sure it is actually the same video file as it lacks the surge prom.

ImageProminence close up by Alexandra Hart, on Flickr

It is not the best, I am sure someone could do better :)

Hello Jack,
I downloaded your 7 GB files of high res area of sunspot in H-alpha I think, Thanks very much ! Those files are amazing. Have you used ImPPG yet? With some care, you could get really fine images with those equipment and that 7 GB file!!

I am new to solar , have only dipped into solar with a Quark chromosphere filter and a small 70mm refractor. I think my video files are ok. I am afraid to use the Autostakkert ! 3. I need to practice on something simple.
Thanks Alexandra for your small video file about 340 Mb. I have followed your work and your solar blog on solarnutcase. Thats tremendous work and skill, not to mention dedication and persistence on all things solar. Many congratulations on your awards on Insight Astronomy Photography competition. I saw your work in Greenwich, wow!!

I have got small progress using PIPP, AS!3 on a small moon image on an ultrawide shot of the cresent moon, so I expect quite good results. I thinks its basically knowing the software and whats been done.
I will hopefully show my work and ask for your help late this year...!
Thanks for all your time and sharing files.

Magnus

Thank you, Magnus. I am eager for someone to process my file with bett3r skills than I have. I am also going to reprocess it myself with new skills I have learned.

I have dabbled in IMPPG but have not had great success, but that is not a knock on the tool, only my use of it. I am practicing using wavers in Registax and High Bandpass sharpening with soft light layers in Gimp.

Please share your results.

Hi Jack,

I'll upload some AVIs overnight. Of course I don't store full material from each time lapse session (100-200 GB), but I keep 1-2 best videos for future experiments.

UPDATE: already uploaded, have fun.

Thank you for the contribution! So I did something foolish and clicked on your link to your animations. I WAS BLOWN AWAY. Those are simply inspiring views of Creation. Wow.

Because I am greedy (not really) if you have a post processed version of those files and steps well take those as well, but again, THANK YOU for these practice files. I hope they help many folks.

With the new skills I'm gaining I have reprocessed my 7GB file...this time with great success with IMPPG.

Workflow:
1) AS3
2) IMPPG
3) GIMP (Highlights down, Shadows WAY up, Levels, Curves)

New Image is:

Hi Jack, any chance you can change the last image for a compressed jpeg or png file, original is over 18Mb and takes an age to load. Thanks.

Alexandra,
Again thank you for the files. I'm experimenting with those Inverse curves which give that 3D look. Here is yours, a bit over processed, but gotta keep learning.

I'll work on Filip's more as well. :)
