June 6th Session

Post by MapleRidge »

Hi everyone...

A more seasonal day here this past Thursday, and I managed to get an hour or so to image before lunch. The disk was completely featureless in the first WL views, but Ha turned up some nice filaments when I looked through the Ha scope.

The first image is the Ha full disk through the LS80T/DSII/B1200Ha solar scope with the limb inverted to show the faint proms. The little prom on the NE quadrant had some nice structure but seeing didn't allow higher resolution images:

A longer exposure pulled up a little more detail as shown below with the disk blocked out:

The full disk WL and CaK images were taken through my 150mm, f8 iStar OTA with the ZWO1600MM camera. The WL image used a Lunt solar wedge and a Baader continuum filter:

For CaK, a modded Lunt solar wedge/B1800CaK filter was used with a Baader K-line filter mounted in the camera nosepiece...a little more to be seen in CaK:

The remaining images were taken through the CR-150 OTA (internal Baader ERF)/Quark Combo with ZWO174MM camera. The images below are two frame mosaics to cover the filaments and areas around them, using a 2x tele-extender:

I switched to a 3x tele-extender to get a bit higher resolution of the two filaments, but the seeing made it difficult to do much better:

Not a bad day considering how bleak the disk looked in WL :o

You got a great set of images there Brian! It is looking very spring like in those shots in comparison to some of your more wintry ones!

Considering the disc is blank in WL, the Halpha view is pretty spectacular, your first shot is really very nice indeed :bow what a lovely collection of images, I really like all the scenery, your blossom is very late, ours has been over for a month now. However I think you have sent all the rain our way, the weather is pretty dire here at the moment, very wet and soggy.

Thanks for all the comments and feedback everyone...very much appreciated :bow

Alexandra, sorry to hear the weather has turned wet for you as well. The rain has returned today, so glad to know that we made some progress with crops the past few days. The fruits trees and grape vines are flowering more than a month late, so that is keeping up with the delay in everything else :(

Mark, there was actually frost on windshields in the early morning hours a about a week ago an hour to the north of me, and snow was in the forecast the same time a bit further north than that.

Very nice images! And a beautiful rainbow!!
I have a noob question on your SSM. I just got one recently. Is it better to have a higher number for your seeing or a lower number? My thought was that you want 1 arc second seeing over 6 arc second, but when the number goes down the graphic turns to red and when it goes up it turns green. What am I missing?

The lower seeing number is preferred, and as you can see my seeing was pretty tough ;)

The image posted is from the FireCapture plugin, not the standard SSM software...the displays are different despite trying to show the same information. I only posted this pic to show conditions but was not using it to control the capture process.

Nice session, Brian!

BTW. Why have you switched from Lunt DS module to the Quark Combo?
Have you applied the Flat Field to Quark images?

Hi Brian,
I really like the "melting" prominence in your first few h-alpha images. Also, that is a fantastic rainbow shot.

Valery and Christopher, thanks for your feedback :bow

Valery...I got the Quark as a potential to DS the modded CR-150/DSII system, but so far I have been playing around with the Quark alone. I usually apply flats at capture, so these should be corrected.

Understand. OK. But the flat field correction can't correct the contrast variations in details if in a given place of Quark aperture the CWL of this place is not at Ha core. FF will correct only brightness make it more or less unifom. Therefore it is important to find the clock tuning knob position where the image delivered by Quark is maximally uniform in brightness and details contrast without FF applying. And use FF only after this position has been found.
And this position depends of F/D at the Quark etalon. For F/30 and F/43 this position can diffrer for 1 or even 2 clicks.

Also, usually real time FF applying noticeably slow down the recording fps making cadence too long or recording much less frames (finally lower S/N). Better to record the FF short movie, make FF frame and then apply it when stacking.

Hope this helps.

Valery.

Pedro and Stuart...

Thanks for your comments guys...always appreciated :bow

Valery, so far I have not played around with the Quark settings...I'm sure it can be refined but limited time for imaging is limiting the time I have to experiment. For now, I'm happy to use flats to remove dust and basic field irregularities. If I get some clear weather and more time at the scope I can work to fine tune the flats more.

I have not seen a significant change in the frame rate when capturing with or without the auto flat option in Firecapture. Capturing with the auto correct simplifies the process since processing is the slowest part of the system for me...home for little more than an hour each evening before crashing for the night. This past Sundays images are barely touched right now, LOL.

No doubt there is room to improve, but for now I'm happy to get a few images!
