August 13th LS80 DS

Post by Astrophil »

It was a short session today due to uncooperative clouds but the recently acquired LS80 demanded attention. I added the second PT etalon to the scope and tried it out. Breaks in the clouds were short lived and I rushed the tuning procedure as the images will confirm. Even illumination and detail across the whole disk is a challenge and I am impressed with those who can achieve such images. Guess I'll just have to keep practicing.

Here are todays images.
Phil

This is what I saw most of the time. Reminds of the Moon.

My attempt at tuning the etalons. I really don't see a lot of improvement over the single stack, maybe due to the sky conditions. Hazy.

Prooms were dim in the double stack and I tried to enhance them by inversion with limited success.

These are fabulous Phil :hamster: even with a double stack you will not see much difference on a quiet sun, you will notice the difference on the limb at a higher magnification as you will not see the double limb.

Thank you all.
Alexandra, That's good to know. I was a little underwhelmed with the addition of the second etalon.
Derek, I can hardly wait for some activity on the sun. In the meantime the best solar images I seen recently are your sunsets! Phenomenal.

I have yet to produce an even illumination when double stacking. In the twenty minutes or so of sunlight since acquiring the scope, I tried rotating components, moving the sun around in the fov, and twisting the tuning knobs. I don't like to resort to post processing tricks, but.
Here is another shot from the same day with the scale reduced by 20% and field flattened in post. Less disk detail but plenty of room for giant proms.

Beautiful images Phil

Looks like the DS LUNT80 is a winner

I think your LS80 FD's came out very well, Phil.

Looking good, Phil. It can be really tricky getting an evenly illuminated field of view. Tweaking back and forth between the etalons and rotating the front etalon is the only way. Sometimes the tweaks are really tiny, looking for the ‘orange peel’ texture all around.

That said, whatever you’ve done in post processing works. :)

Thanks guys for the kind words. I am realizing that full disk imaging is quit different that narrow field or high resolution in terms of capture and processing. Throw in a second etalon and the challenge to achieve a quality image intensifies greatly.

Stu, thanks for taking the time. I will try your suggestions and post the results. This setup has the two pressure tuning etalons and a filter between them at the rear of the scope. Sound advice, thank you.

Post processing of the last image was only a pseudo flat (blur and divide) and a histogram stretch using a gradient mask. I got lucky.

Phil

Basically your DS look good.
Your post field flattening looks good also; probably your will always need some kind of flattening.

Hi Phil...

The DS image turned out quite nice :bow

The DS scope has only revealed subtle improvements with the low activity, but there are usually a few filaments or slight bright spots that stand out in the DS images. It will shine once we get some more activity!!!
