September 7th Session

Post by MapleRidge »

Good day everyone...

Saturday looked promising for some solar work as the day dawned, but the forecast held true to its 'mix of sun and cloud' description...heavier on the cloud part though ;) I managed to get a set of full disk images and start on the higher resolution work before the clouds shut me down. As we were having lunch, it cleared again so I opened the dome again and picked up where I left off. Clouds shut me out again, and it stared to rain about 20 mins later. The limb activity was quite impressive again, with several detailed proms on the NW limb.

The first image is a disk/limb composite taken with the LS80T/LS75FHa/B1200 and PGR Grasshopper Express camera (ICX674 chip):

I used a longer exposure to pull up more of the faint proms in the image below:
Full-Ha-2.jpg

There were also 2 small bright spots...one north of the equator near mid disk, the other just west of the mid disk on the south side of the solar equator. Both were roughly 30 degrees offset from the equator. They blend into the surrounding chromosphere in the FD images, so I've circled them in the image below:

I set the modded CR-150/DSII/B1800Ha scope up to try for some higher resolution images, with a 3x tele-extender ahead of the ZWO174MM camera. The first is the more northern small spot of activity:

The drifting clouds became more frequent so I abandoned the disk and moved to the limb to get the large prom while the sun still shone:

The above image was taken at 11:29 EDT and I got a few more videos around 13:15 EDT when I went back for the second round. The image below shows a lot of change in the proms over the 1.5 hour break:

This was all I could manage with the clouds, but still happy with the results.

Questions and comments are always welcome,
Brian

Certainly a better view of the proms than I got visually.

Yes, camera has the ability to pull up the fainter proms compared to what you eye can perceive. At the eyepiece I could make out the brighter part of the arc but that was it.

The northern 'spot' that I imaged showed as a small white spot to the eye, and probably enhanced in the double stacked scope.

Looks like you had a good saturday Brian! Good work with the bright points, at those higher (and lower!) latitudes indicators of cycle 25!

Thanks Mark :bow

These spots I'm sure will be short lived, but every sign that Cycle 25 is strengthening is welcomed!
