Quark Proms and Chrom Oct 10th

Post by Starry Jack » Sat Oct 12, 2019 5:49 pm

I got more experiments today with the Quark (and I used flats to boot!). SO many large proms today!

I experimented on the PROMS and the same CHROM ARs with Quark NEG 2 and Quark ZERO. The sun went behind a tree before I could get Quark POS 2.

The flats seemed to increase contrast as well...is that correct?

QUARK NEGATIVE 2 (best 50 of 200 frames though AS3 then IMPPG then GIMP).

Is there something wrong with most of the images?

Hi Jack...

Nice collection of images and the proms are a challenge when they are so faint, but you still pulled them up!!!

These are great, some super proms here :hamster:

I would say that neg2 is far more on band than zero (which doesn't look very nice - sorry). I would try negative 3, 4 and 5 next.

Jack,

Good images at neg 2. Maybe hold back on the deconvolution and apply more sharpening in ImPPG as you are introducing spotty artefacts into your images. I’ve found that these come in when the deconvolution scale is set too high and/or the number of iterations is set too high. The actual values depend on a number of variables. Play with the settings to see how they affect your image and use the zoom (plus) function to check the image quality in close. You should be able to pull out detail without introducing artefacts.

Hope this helps.

Good stuff, Stu. Thank you. The large blobs are from the flats. I will indeed work on the small little round artifacts as directed.

You're not doing flats right if you're getting blobs.

Once the flat is set you can't change the focus, quark dial, rotate the camera etc. If you change any variables a new flat needs to be set.

Thanks all. What's interesting is that the more I Practice the more I can see comments like Val's. But Alexandra's point is spot on, risk of a poor Quark in exchange vs the angst of exchange versus just pure enjoyment.

Cheers,
Jack
