Maximum allowable file size for posting?
Would any of the moderators be able to give me some advice on the maximum allowable file size for posting?. I managed to capture my first animation
of today's large prominence, I captured 375 images at 20 second intervals till the clouds rolled in . here is a heavily edited Gif of 12 frames that I have put together to give you some idea how lucky I was image wise.

Re: Maximum allowable file size for posting?
Hello Martin
There are no file size limits on the forum although we have a total storage space of 28GB and we have used 24GB already. So if we have only 4GB left and you upload a file 500MB in size you can tell how long we are going to last. Please be sensible, that is the rule.
Tiff images don't open so if anyone uploads a big Tiff and leaves it unopened this is what fills our space unnecessarily.
We try to encourage folks to upload their huge Gifs to places like Flickr or Astrobin and then link it through to here if possible, then they take the storage and we enjoy the images if you need help with linking then please do ask.

Re: Maximum allowable file size for posting?
Hi Martin
Alexandra said it all.
I always post links of my images (webpage or FLICKR).
It is very important to take into account the limit we have as far as storage goes (4Gb left is very low)

Re: Maximum allowable file size for posting?
Martin,
I noticed the large prominence on the GONG images today but could not observe it due to cloudy snowy weather. You brought it to life for me!
Thanks
James

Re: Maximum allowable file size for posting?
Alexandra,
What happens when the storage limit is reached? It probably will be reached in time. Do images get deleted, posts get deleted or does the forum obtain more space? At my job we save data, in images and otherwise and after awhile the server fills up. They usually delete the oldest data until they have freed up adequate space to run for an indefinite time longer. FIFO. Then it is delete and start again...

Re: Maximum allowable file size for posting?
I have no idea James, that will be up to the big man to decide. I think he said the largest file sized images would go first and at least try to remove all the redundant Tiff files that don't open anyway

Thank you all for your comments . Alexandra I created a Flickr account for my animations and large files. This was my first attempt, here are the results.

Re: Maximum allowable file size for posting?
That's fabulous Martin
What file type is it? just trying to link it here. When it is an animated gif (save for web and devices) the BBcode links through to here but this doesn't.
I see it is an MP4, still looking how you link
I have asked Mark, he is the whizz tech guy

Re: Maximum allowable file size for posting?
Alexandra, I converted the GIF file to an MP4 as it was a smaller file size. If a Gif is a better option please let me know, as I'm not tech savvy on social media platforms.

Re: Maximum allowable file size for posting?
Its OK Martin, I'm wondering if you can't link an MP4 here but then I am not that great with computers so I may have missed it, Mark will know.
In Photoshop I usually "save for web and devices" and choose gif then pick a reasonable size like 1000 pixels wide or 1500 pixels wide, then click save. When you upload this to Flickr it won't run from the photostream page but don't worry, if you go to 'view sizes' then pick 'original' it will play. When you go to 'share' pick BBCode, then pick Original (size), copy this BB code and paste it into the forum subject box, it will then play in a window in your post. It helps if you loop the animation so it keeps going otherwise folk will miss it and it will be over.

Re: Maximum allowable file size for posting?
Hi,In Photoshop I usually "save for web and devices" and choose gif then pick a reasonable size like 1000 pixels wide or 1500 pixels wide, then click save.
Yes that is a way to get an image with less kilobyte but one should take into consideration that for example if my image is 2000 x 2000 pixel and has a certain size changing its pixel size to 1000 x 1000 will also reduce your details of the original image.
It is by far better to leave the image at its original pixel size and use instead the compression factor.
My images of about 2300 x 2300 pixels using a compressión of 60% are about 1 MB and at 100% they were 3.3MB. You can check in real time how the compression percentage affects your image and then decide for a compressión.
As you cans ee in my images i have not lost details and no compression artifacts are showing up.
Compressión artifacts are those square blocks or pronounced jaggy lines where you clearly notice brightness differences.
Rainer
