Hello Solarchat

Post by solarnoob »

Greetings solarchat :D , thank you for sharing your knowledge and expertise with beginners like me.
I currently own a Lunt 50mm Ha B400, I've moved to the Lunt 100mm (non-modular); I should be will receiving it in a few days. My main interest is visual; however, I hope to be doing some imaging soon. My questions are:
- What type of camera works best for the 100 mm? I noticed that ASI178 and ASI174 especially are very popular among solar imagers
- Is there a book about solar astronomy (English or French) that you would recommend?
Thank you

Frank

Frank,
I am fairly new to Ha solar observing myself. At this time I am visual only too though I have played around with imaging with my DSLR and iPhone. Welcome to the CBSAP SolarChat forum.

Welcome Frank.

Regarding the camera. It depends a bit on what you want to do exactly. For full disk imaging, both will do the trick really (maybe the 178 a bit better). If you're interested in doing more high res work with a barlow, then the 174 will be a much better option.

Another welcome from me Frank.

As a newbie myself to the Solarchat, I've also found a great interest here and some good advise too.

There must be books relating to Solar Astronomy, but of course there's much more information on the internet and of course - here too.

I'll leave the camera/100mm to those with that knowledge.

Terry

Frank,
The problem is that you'll need to change your name soon because soon you won't be "solarNOOBE" any more but "solarEXPERT"!
I enjoy my ASI174 because I use a Quark so by nature we begin to get longer focal lengths right off the start. Good price too when they come on sale.

I strongly considered a Lunt 100 but ended up getting a Coronado SolarMax II 90 DS. It's actually a 102mm in single stacked mode going to 90mm when the front etalon is attached. I found the Coronado on a closeout sale for 2000 off it's original price. I couldn't pass that up. The vendor sold out of them less than a week after I bought mine.
