January 9 2021 Observations

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Session time is 11:38am to 1:00pm EST local time ( US ). Skies are clear with fair seeing. Temp is 36F. Breezy.

Coronado SolarMax II 90 DS. 32x, 44.5x and 64x. ( Ha )
The Sun is calm in Ha but there are still some detail to be seen. The SE quadrant shows three easy large filaments. The eastern one curves northwest into an arc. Two bright prominences are on the limb there. They look like bright projections with fuzzy edges. A very short distance above the northernmost of the two bright proms I see another small fainter very thin prominence rising up and curling southward and then back down a bit. It resembles a short walking cane! I see another tiny prom well north of these three. The SE quadrant shows a slightly different texture than most of the disc.

The NW Quadrant shows two bright prominences on the limb and a tiny fainter one. The northernmost one curves slightly southward. I see a dark filament nearby, intersecting the limb very near the northernmost prom. I don't see any connection between the two which would have made it a filaprom.

I see a small faint filament in the NNE not far off the pole.

I see a single easy short rounded prom in the SW with two tiny fainter ones nearby. I also see a slight roughness to the disc in the SW quadrant. I see two small filaments here too!

The discwide spicule mottling of the chromosphere is easily seen today with good contrast.

Celestron NexStar 102GT w/Altair wedge and Baader 540nm Continuum filter. 55x ( WL )
I can see faculae in both the SE and SW quadrants of the disc. One tiny patch of the larger patch in the SE is fairly easy to see and is very near the limb. I see no spots or pores anywhere on the disc. I can see the fine granulation of the solar disc today.

All while listening to monastic chant on Pandora.

Carpe Diem!

James

P.S. I edited this post a number of times since I was typing it in as I found new features. When I thought I was done I would find something else!

Excellent hunting whilst listening to the music James and have just had a close look at SDO, where in the S.E. near the limb in that AR which was approaching the limb, there are a couple of brighter regions - which could form something more or a the remnants of that decaying AR.

Watch that space, whilst listening to Gustav Holst ???

Cheers
Terry

Thanks for the report James, it looks like the sun has been throwing off filaments yesterday. Looks like i'm going to have cloud again today, was clear overnight and there was a frost at dawn, but the sky is completely overcast now.

Lovely report James, I too could only see a small patch of faculae in the SE and SW on my CaK too

You just can't win the battle against the clouds. You haven't bought a new piece of astro-gear have you? That's always a cloud magnet.

I think you've hit it on the head... Mrs T bought me a new scope for xmas, so that probably explains it

I also hope she's following my birthday list to the letter and getting me the telecentric I asked for. Given that i'm planning on getting another camera and have ordered a permanent pier to go in the garden and I reckon we're set for the cloudiest year on record

Here's a pick of the pier - i've gone for one 1400mm high and with a larger central tube...

Hi Mark...

Great news on the ability to put a pier in!!!

Looking at the pier, I think if you put one to your back yard add a nosecone to the top the neighbours will think Werner von Baun moved in ;)

Thanks guys! The pier will be tall enough when the head is on to 'see over' my neighbours fence so I can still see the sun in the winter months. It will definitely be getting a NASA sticker on the fins for effect.

Careful topiary means a wall of plants will surround it to make it invisible to prying eyes but also afford me maximum solar views all year round.

I live in the middle of 'deep sh!t central' and so putting a permanent observatory up is just invitation to the local scum to come and burgle. We had our Christmas wreath stolen from our front door over Christmas

The pier is going to be rock bolted to the concrete pad so short of a JCB it ain't going anywhere. The scopes live indoors and are taken out as and when needed, but I have achieved good husband points with Mrs T by not keeping a mount and tripod in the house anymore. Naturally she is in charge of the topiary wall and the flora that grows within it.

It's all about solutions ;)

Mark,
It sad. Scum are everywhere. While we were gone one day we came back and found scars around our locks on the front door where someone had tried to pry the door open or push the locks back. I found the screwdriver they had used in the attempt lying in the yard. I had a security system put in shortly afterward.

Stole your wreath. How pitiful.

James
