G1 Geomagnetic Storm 6-7th Feb '21-UPDATED

Post by Carbon60 »

Hi all,

After a few days of relative quiet, Earth received a kick from fast flowing and magnetically unstable solar wind on 6-7th Feb, sparking a G1 geomagnetic storm easily detected on my magnetometer.

At its peak, wind speeds exceeded 500 km/s. More importantly its magnetic field repeatedly switched polarity as shown in the corresponding data from the DSCOVR satellite at L1 making it more potent as a geoeffective force.

Things might remain unsettled for the next day or two as the source of the wind is a wide equatorial coronal hole. Aurora might be on offer to those lucky enough to be in the right place under clear skies. Good luck.

Thanks for looking.

Stu.

Many thanks, Alexandra.

It seems to be subsiding now after producing beautiful Aurora both north and south.

As you say, just too cloudy for us here.

You're both making me feel guilty... I'm a part-timer now. Semi-retired and all that.

 don't worry about it, embrace it. I will be as soon as I can too, only another decade to go...
