Radio meteor detection- Feb 2021

Post by Carbon60 »

We've had a bit of excitement here in the UK over a fireball meteorite that landed over parts of the south-west (near Cheltenham) on Feb 28th (we don't get that many meteor impacts of significance on our small piece of real estate :) ). People have been collecting samples for museums and lab analysis as carbonaceous chondrites of this particular class are quite rare, so there has been media coverage and speculation on its origin and the secrets that fragments might hold about the early Universe.

This seems to have been a 'sporadic' meteorite, not forming any part of a meteor shower and my radio detector confirms this with very low levels of activity recorded over the month and at the time of the fall.

Here's a summary for February, which, like Jochen's data, shows the low count rates expected 'out of season'.

Here are the data for the day in question (28th) and the previous day. No uptick or anything unusual was noted at the time of the fall, confirming it as a sporadic event.
