G1 Geomagnetic Storm 13th March 2021

Post by Carbon60 »

Hi all,

A G1 geomagnetic storm arrived in the late hours of March 13th UTC and had a significant impact on magnetometers such as my own here in the UK. The cause was an uptick in the solar wind speed to over 550 km/s coupled with an oscillating positive/negative interplanetary magnetic field (Bz). The storm was preceded by geomagnetic unrest, also resulting from negative Bz, but with significantly slower wind speeds of around 350 km/s.

Thanks for looking.

Wow!! that's a fantastic graph, I bet you get excited when the computer shows you something like that :hamster: Can you get you computer to alert you when levels get to a certain rate so that you have an early warning system?

Hi,

Very interesting and I guess a pure coincidence as Yesterday I finished my round 68 around the Sun and the peak was approximately at the time I was born ...

I really like these observations Stuart...so much more to monitor than the visible Sun :bow

Excellent data Stu! we are around equinox time again with the Russell - McPherron effect kicking in. Be interesting to see your record of it in the weeks ahead and how compares to the (relative) lull either side.
