August 3, 2020 Spectroheliograms: the Fraunhofer Four

Post by p_zetner »

Hi Everyone.

Slowly working through the processing of my August 3 spectroheliograms.
Here is a montage of the Sun as it appears (very differently) in four of the Fraunhofer lines.
AR12768 offered a great opportunity to view the extensive plage in the four different lights.

Cheers.
Peter.

(Ooops! I neglected to orient these correctly. They are left-right inverted with respect to the true disk orientation.)

Thought I would add these images which include the prominences.
The H alpha and Ca K images show inverted disks with proms while the HeD3 image shows the normal disk with proms.
Cheers.

Wow! these are fantastic Peter, certainly best viewed in full size :bow :hamster:

Have you ever looked in the Aluminium line? a chap on Facebook took an image and was wondering what he was seeing as not much is published about the features in this region. The only person I know imaging in this line is John (Highfnum).

Very interesting and detailed images, Peter.

If I want to build a spectroheliograph by myself where should I start from ? Being a physicist I know the theory but I need some practical advice. Thanks

Thanks Alexandra and Raf.

Alexandra:
My feeling is that the Aluminum line (I'm assuming the one at 3961.5 angstroms) would give an image very similar to a Ca H or K image taken in the line wings or taken with broader spectral linewidth (a Baader K-line filter for example). I haven't taken the time to image this one myself for this reason. It is a strong line though so might offer something different. I think I captured this line in my August 3rd session so I'll take a look at it.

Raf:
For a start, I would recommend the book by Ken Harrison (Harrison (2015) “Imaging Sunlight using a Digital Spectroheliograph”, Springer "Practical Astronomy" Series.) as an introduction and broad overview of the devices that have been constructed by amateurs. I have written articles about my own instrument for the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada (Zetner, Peter (2015) “An Amateur Spectroheliograph”, Journal of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada v109, no.4, pg.151.) and for the Vereinigung der Sternfreunde Fachgruppe Spektroskopie (Zetner, Peter (2017) “Solar Imaging with a Spectroheliograph”, Spektrum Nr.52 – 2017 available online at http://spektroskopie.vdsastro.de/files/ ... trum52.pdf). Personally, I have found the website of Philippe Rousselle (http://www.astrosurf.com/spectrohelio/index-en.php) enormously helpful as well as that of Andre and Sylvain Rondi (http://www.astrosurf.com/rondi/obs/shg/index.htm). Feel free to ask questions here. By the way, I'm a physicist myself, retired in 2016.

Cheers.
Peter

These are really remarkable images, Peter. Superb.

Where do you intend to go from here? Larger aperture for closer views?

Hi Peter, I liked "Solar Imaging with a Spectroheliograph: Part 1". Where can I find Part 2 ? Or is it still in progress?
