More results with the SolEx SHG

Post by PDB »

Probably last of the sunny days for a while, so lots of testing with the SolEx this morning.
Hope I picked the correct spectral lines, but specialists here will tell if I was wrong.

Good results, Paul.
Personally, I’d like to see the grayscale images as well.
Cheers.

Peter,

Here they are. I agree monochrome usually better than color.

Can these SolEX SHGs be used for visual work or are they only suited for imaging? Can one be bought ready to use without having to build it or assemble it yourself?

The idea of a spectroheliograph is quite attractive because it can be used to view any spectral line in the visible spectrum. If someone manufactured these at a decent quality ready-to-use at an affordable price it could be serious competition for etalon and dichroic filter manufacturers.

James,
The Sol’Ex like all the digital SHG is an imaging only system.
Shelyak are selling the optical components for around 450 Euro, then you need a 3D printed housing, helical focuser and a small pixel camera , ASI 290 or similar.
I’m sure if the concept is taken up someone (Shelyak?) will sell the instrument.

I would love to see someone sell the completed instrument. Though I am primarily a visual observer I do dabble a bit in imaging and could see use in this instrument. It's ability to image any spectral line is great!

The ASI 178MM is probably the ideal camera to use, but the ASI 290MM and ASI 174MM also work. A lot of people seem to use 2x2 binning with the 178MM, in which case it has essentially the same pixel size as the 174MM, but with a smaller sensor. The advantage of the larger sensor of the 174MM is it allows for more "real estate" for the slit: either a longer slit or for tolerance to errors in tilt of the optics which may cause the slit projection to not fall completely on the sensor. It is highly recommended to use a camera with USB3 (not the guide scope versions with only USB2) to have the fastest acquisition possible.

Hi James,

At the moment I am building one. I bought the optical kit from Telescopes.net (Sponsor of this forum) and printing the parts by myself.

In France they sell the 3D printed parts as a set and you would need to assemble it.

Perhaps I will sell mine ¿?

I still do not know ... All in all maybe a cost of US $ 1,500.00 ... including two helical focusers and an ASI 178MM .. Without ASI 178MM the cost of course goes down.

Rainer,
I’ll be anxiously waiting to see how you do with this. You do very well with “ standard “ equipment and you post some of the sharpest images around. Now you will be able to image any wavelength including CaK and CaH!! Good luck with your project!!

Prices have gone up last year, but I think I made mine for less than €1000.00 (a cheap 3D printer included). I had the camera of course.

This is a good design for a helical focuser: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4695777
(When reworking the Sol'Ex to a HR Star'Ex, probably in test when we finally get some good weather, needed an extra one, so printed that with good results.)

For printing a Sol'EX: any 3D printing service should be able to print the parts using the supplied stl files. (That is how they deliver in France)
Probably you will need to specify filament type and color. (It should not pass IR or be to transparant)

Here is a result from last November
