Riparia riparia

Post by Ivan »

Hello,

Last weekend, walking along the banks of the Volga outside the city, I saw small birds that nested along the cliff. These creatures are called Riparia riparia. I have read that they are common everywhere except Australia and Antakrtida.
I had a zoom lens and bright sun, which allowed me to "get close" and "freeze" them in flight. Several cloudy dots in two photos are insects that are most likely unlucky.

Nicely captured, Ivan. These little speed demons can be quite challenging to frame up in flight; well done!

Thanks, Jochen

When I was filming I thought that nothing would work at all, that day there were also seagulls that dived for fish and a "Milvus migrans" high in the sky.

These are terrific :hamster: :hamster: and thanks for using the Latin name too :) I could look them up and see they are Sand Martins in English (although I did recognise them as such anyway). Fabulous to see you have a good breeding colony, sadly here in the UK they have declined immensely. Twenty years ago when we moved to our house there were two big colonies on the river. Now they are sadly extinct on our river. This is the same for Swallows and House Martins. Twenty years ago there was a thriving colony of House Martins and millions of Swallows around the cow fields, now none at all. There is no summer without a Swallow and now this is the case :( we have killed everything :(

Look after your beautiful Sand Martins, you will miss them if they go.

Nice to see these pictures Ivan...well done!!!

i sued to see a similar type of bird nesting in the walls of an abandoned gravel pit, but its been 50 years since I have been to that site I have no idea if they are still there. We still have some barn swallows around though.

Alexandra, Brian, thanks for your comments. Everything is changing so rapidly that in the end we will be left alone.
