Co-rotating Interaction Region 7th August 2021

Post by Carbon60 »

Earth is passing through a 'Co-rotating Interaction Region', where fast flowing solar wind leaving the Sun catches up with slow moving solar wind creating higher density regions (like pressure waves) that carry within them fluctuating magnetic fields. These can be geoeffective, creating Aurorae and geomagnetic unrest detectable on magnetometers such as mine here in the UK.

There's more unrest to come shortly with more fast flowing solar wind (from a couple of coronal holes) in the forecast. Good luck if you are in a good location to view northern (or southern) lights. :)

Thanks for looking.

Good catch Stu! More of these needed, Iceland at the end of October (fingers crossed), so these would definitely help with the Aurora!
