C class flare animation 28 Aug 0834-0943 & SOS!

Post by nicspenceryork »

I thought you might enjoy seeing this animated C class flare from August! Better late than never (been to 2 weddings, on holiday & been building a DIY observatory... well, it's a shed with a sliding roof section, still under construction) so only just processed it today.
I use ImPGG via wine on a MacBook Air and simply cannot get the 'Align Image Sequence' Tool to work, any suggestions anyone?! I resorted to hand aligning these 52 frames.

Here's the animation, hope it works:

I have not noticed any movement in the image but still it's a good one.

Ahh that’s a shame. I uploaded it in Flickr as a gif and shared it with the BBCode. There’s plenty of movement to see… when it works!
Not sure where I’ve gone wrong then!
Thanks though James

Maybe this link to an mp4 of the animation will work, how frustrating!

Hi Nic,

Did you save your animated gif to Flickr in the ‘original’ format and then copy the BBcode (again in the ‘original’ format) and paste it into your post? It looks on Flickr like the image is a ‘still’ JPG.

Thanks for asking Stu, I really believed I had!
I used GIMP to animate on a MacBook Air. In animation I used optimise (for GIF). Then Export As with a .gif
That then seemed to save as a series of stills on the desktop which didn’t move. When I airdropped it to my iPhone it began to play as an animation. I guess I thought it would magically play on Flickr too! Then I used the BCCode. So I’m going wrong somewhere in exporting it from GIMP and/or uploading it to Flickr. Can you see where I’m going adrift?!

Nice animation Nic! I am surprised that you have issues with a surface image such as this one getting aligned by ImPPG, my issues typically come with proms with a blown out disk! You should check Crop to Intersection and Stabilize High Contrast Features. If you have Photoshop, it will do a great job of aligning images that include surface features as well. Maybe it has to do with running it through Wine for the Macbook.

Hi Nic,

Have you checked out my animation tutorial? It describes how to export out of GIMP as an animated GIF. You should end up with a gif file rather than a series of still images. This is the file that you need to upload to Flickr. :)

Thanks Warren I’ll check out the features you mention. I wondered if it was ‘too much Wine’ too!
Thank Stu I don’t remember having seen your animation tutorial, where can I find it? I love solar animations and I’d love to post them properly in future to save us from this kerfuffle!

Oh wow your tutorial would've saved me a lot of 'blood, sweat & tears' had I stumbled across it before now... although it's been fun/rewarding fathoming it out through trial and error! There's still some really useful info in there I didn't know so that's so helpful thanks Stu.

Thanks Mark. The obs should be completed in the next 2-3 weeks so I'd be glad to share the design/end product.

Thanks for the effort Nic and we are both in the obsy-building trade, as my second one is in the electrical-installation stage.

Cheers

That's a fabulous animation, you were so lucky to capture all the flare activity and material ejection :bow :hamster: I hope you can make the gif and Flickr work together soon :) and I am very impressed to hear you are building an observatory :hamster:
