Minor CME and Solar Wind Driven Geomagnetic Unrest 29th November 2021

Post by Carbon60 »

Hi all,

You might be seeing increasing numbers of aurora photographs on social media currently. This is because we've just experienced an uptick in geomagnetic activity resulting from a weak CME which arrived during the late hours of November 27th here in Europe. This was quickly followed by a stream from a coronal hole of solar wind carrying a southerly oriented magnetic field. These events created geomagnetic unrest leading to auroral activity. Southerly fields link very effectively with Earth's own magnetic field allowing the solar wind particles (protons and electrons) to stream into our upper atmosphere, causing it to glow. The intensity of this glow ebbs and flows as the magnetic field strength undulates under the power of the solar wind and these undulations are what are recorded on my magnetometer here in the UK.

This is my recoding of the events over the past 54 hours showing the arrival of the CME and solar wind stream.

Things are likely to settle down before another solar wind stream reaches Earth in a few days.

Thanks for looking.

Stu.

Excellent data Stuart :hamster: I did wake to find an alert this morning, but looks like I was in my warm and cozy bed at the time :)

Looks like your graph topped out at +10, still not as big as the big one :)

Thanks, Alexandra.
I think it was cloudy in any case. It certainly was here.

Hopefully there will be more ‘10 plus’ events as cycle 25 progresses. :)
