Flare Fishing 26 Dec. 2021

Post by dccole9 »

I went "flare fishing" again on the 26th of December in an attempt to capture a flare after 3hr+ of recording. I'm fairly certain I got one near Active Region 2920 at about 20:30UT so I thought this was worth posting. Is there anywhere I can look to confirm this?

Thanks,
Chris

You can use the Helioviewer image viewer to do so. Put in the date and time and choose the spacecraft and instrument you want to use. You can even layer the images from two different spacecraft or use two different instruments on a spacecraft.

Give it a try!

James

P.S. It certainly looks like you caught a couple of flaring areas.

Nice vid, you got a small filament lifting off rather than a flare.

Definitely an eruptive filament lifting off to the right of that AR after it appears to display a small flare event.

That is a great filament lift off :bow :hamster:

Best place to check flares are here and hover over the chart for more details

https://sohowww.nascom.nasa.gov/ is the originating satellite for showing flares and typically using their MPEG or GIF movie tab, the latest flares can be seen in as higher resolution as practical.. :bow

https://sohowww.nascom.nasa.gov/data/realtime/gif/ for example... :bow

There are many other pages on the SOHO website and of course The Solar & Heliospheric Observatory/SOHO satellite was launched in 1995 - 26-years ago !!! :band
Currently it anticipated to remain in service until 2025 (30-years) and some of the equipment on board was designed and manufactured - just up the road from me. Almost incredible for any Solar-imaging satellite to be in service for that long, and presumably may remain so for even longer... :band

Further details available from E.S.A's PDF as https://sohowww.nascom.nasa.gov/about/d ... _Sheet.pdf

I must add to my reports here on SC, more from SOHO as and when in future...

All,

Thank you very much for the references and encouragement. My goal right now is to make the images more presentable which means more processing practice.

Of course, the biggest prize is to capture an X-flare.

Thanks Again,

Chris

Great animation Chris :bow

I'd agree to a small flare, but the eruptive filament is the best catch!
