Unexpected G2 Geomagnetic Storm

Post by Carbon60 »

An unexpected G2 storm sparked beautiful aurora and moved magnetometer 'needles' around the globe, including my own here in the UK.

Here are my results.

Things seem to be calming down, although there might be a CME arriving over the next day or two. We'll see.

Thanks for looking.

It was clear too, but the Moon was very bright and I was asleep too ;)

Glad you caught it though :hamster:

Hi Stuart,

Great catch.

Everytime I see your great reports fingers start to itch and I want to put one but then I realize my area is much too loaded with steel in the construction.

:(

Good record of the impact Stu. I've seen quite a few shots of it from around the UK with a flat dark northern horizon.

The timing of it is coincident with the pressure wave from the Tonga eruption impacting the UK. I had a Kp5 alert which was enough to get me out of the chair and take a look from the loft windows. It was clear, which surprised me after a grey damp frosty foggy day. however the northern horizon typically had cloud and with such an impact might have given me a low green arc. Another time...

Hi Mark,
The thought crossed my mind that the events might in some way be related, but DSCOVR satellite data show that the storm definitely originated from events at the Sun (southerly oriented, erratic Bz). It would have been really interesting, otherwise.
Even on a ‘good’ night I never seem to be able to see the Aurora from home.

Yes, steel close by a magnetometer is not such a good idea. Could you not bury the sensor in a remote area away from the steel on a long wire?

Ahh....I see what you mean, Rainer. It's a pity.

Hi Stuart,

Another nuisance maybe is the newly installed electric fence with an impulse every second with 12.000 Volt.

I see that already in my Lightning detection system how it changes the E-Field ...

  That wouldn't help either, although the sampling step could be done between pulses
