Applying a slight tilt to filters?

Post by Merlin66 »

Anyone found a solution to applying a slight tilt (ghost removal) to filters?
I have a 2" filter in a 2" focuser which needs a tilt......
So far I've been "cross threading" the filter and applying some BluTac to hold in in place. Seems to do the job, but doesn't look too safe.
Any better solutions????

Hi Ken...

Could the internal threaded retaining ring in the filter (most have one) be loosened and place something under the filter element on one side so that when you re-tighten the retaining ring the filter sits on an angle? That way the main mounting thread is still properly engaged.

Just thinking out loud ;)

Exactly what Brian says, I use 'blu-tack' to impart the tilt in the loosened ring.

I'm a bit late to the party but here's my solution. I machined a M42 extension tube so it has a female thread each end, I then cut down to about 80% of the tube, I then insert a flat bladed screwdriver in the slot and open it out slightly to give the required tilt. I mount the tilter to a 2" tube and filter with M42- M48 adaptors. The inside of the tube is lined with non reflective felt. I use a M42 extension tube as it will still give me clearance within the focuser tube if I need a lot of tilt,
