Ha on Feb 5th - new images added Feb 7th
Good day everyone...
Another beautiful clear day here on Saturday, and the sun felt nice in the -15C air
I was able to get to the observatory in the late morning and image for the better part of two hours. The fist image is a full disk composite, with separate exposures for the disk and limb. I have one with the limb inverted as usually post, and left the limb as a positive in the other. Imaged through the LS80T/LS75FHa/B1800Ha solar scope with the ASAI1600mm and 1.6x barlow: With all the details on the disk and limb, I was busy imaging them all and since many f the AR's covered a lot of the solar disk I had to do mosaics to cover them all with the Orion 130ED and the custom DS etalon assembly. These images were taken with a 3x focal extender and ASI290MM camera. The seeing was my winter average, so the mosaics are a bit of in some of the component frames. The first is AR2939 and the nice filament associated with it and the filaments that trail back to the SE limb: The next is the newly arrived AR291 on the NE limb showing a lot of activity: Near the northern mid-disk was AR2940: The last of the active regions was AR's 2636-2638 found close to the western limb: When I went to image the proms I found that the big prom barely fit on the chip. I removed the focal extender and re-imaged the features at prime focus (f7=910mm focal length) and saw that I should have set this up in the first place. The larger FOV suited the large AR's much better and the faster exposures were better wit the seeing. So, the big prom is shown below: Each of the AR's are shown again below at prime focus: Other chores forced me to close up the observatory, but I would have loved to stay and do some WL and CaK images...oh well, another day.
Hope you like these, and questions and comments are always welcome,
Brian

Re: Ha on Feb 5th
Brian, pilgrim to solar observing here. The large cloud that appears to come of of the “Eiffel Tower” Prominence (that I have been looking at through the day, ). Is that a mass ejection that is captured by the magnetic field and is just drifting there? These images are so helpful to me as a newbie observer, thanks so much.

A beautiful series of images showing very well all the major features pf the sun, Brian. The big prom image is great The mosaics turned out very well also. Over all, seems like you had a very good, but very cold session.

Re: Ha on Feb 5th - more images added
Hi everyone...
I overlooked the images that I had taken that show the smaller proms along the western limb...I guess the big prom distracted me
These all have some nice structure so I didn't want them to be left out! These were taken at the prime focus of DS modded Orion 130 OTA: That is then last of them

Re: Ha on Feb 5th - new images added Feb 7th
Wow!! what a magnificent set Brian
Dfisch400 - I don't think it is a mass ejection because they usually move pretty quickly upwards and either escape the Sun's field or fall straight back down again. As this material is pretty stable and hanging about there for quite some time, I would presume it is a quiescent prom and the plasma is being held aloft in the magnetic field in a stable way. Just a guess.

Thanks Alexandra
Dfisch400, sorry I missed your question earlier but I'd agree with what Alexandra said. That prom has been hanging out on the SE limb for days, and based on the GONG images this morning it is still going strong.

Dear Brian,
Thanks for showing us your superb solar FD solar H-alpha images.
I was wondering how you get a 1.6x barlow as I thought they were only 2x or 3x versions available.
It would be nice if we can get smaller versions of Barlow e.g. 1.45 or 1.55 versions as well. Many thanks.
Magnus

Re: Ha on Feb 5th - new images added Feb 7th
Hi Magnus...
My barlow is a home made setup, using a lens element from a 2x barlow and mounting it inside the 1.25" camera adapter nosepiece. This moved the lens much close to the sensor reducing the amount of magnification. It give approx 1.3x on most of my ZWO camera, but the tilt adjuster on the ASI1600MM moves the sensor further back making a greater magnification...I figure it is around 1.6x.
There is a commercial 1.6x barlow that fits 2" focusers sold as well. Note, this isn't any sort of telecentric or the spacing wouldn't have the effect it has.
Hope this explains it.
