G2 Geomagnetic Storm (CME Impact) 13th-14th March 2022

Hi all,

Some geomagnetic data from overnight.

This was the largest magnetometer response in quite a while, certainly since the last solar maximum. I thought something had gone wrong with my instrument until I rescaled the charts to reveal the extent of the magnetic deviation from normal levels. On this scale, look how the readings flatline before and after the event. There is no ambiguity about when things kicked off. This was as a result of a direct hit by a mild CME that launched from the Sun a few days ago.

We're seeing many beautiful images of the aurorae on the news/social media. No wonder, given the scale of this, although at G2 there's still a long way to go (up to G5). We'll see what cycle 25 can deliver.

Thanks for looking.

Stu.

THanks Stu, another good record of the event. We're off to Anglesey this coming weekend and with good weather forecast i'm hoping the geomagnetic forecast is good too as there's a few good spots I know.

Wow!! up to 20, a new record!

I think Mary McIntyre got some aurora shots from Oxfordshire, she really was lucky indeed as the peak looks very quick.

Hi Stu,

Every time I see those graphs my finger itches but having too much steel surrounding the area I get over it ...

I already have a problem with my Lightning detection system and my electric fence

Very interesting.

Thanks, Mark and Alexandra.

Let’s hope you hit it lucky in Anglesey with the weather, both terrestrial and space, Mark ;)

It was a fairly quick ‘pulse’ at its peak, Alexandra, but I understand the disturbance leading up to that was sufficient to ignite some impressive Aurorae. I can’t wait to see what a G3-G5 storm looks like.

Hi Rainer,
It’s a real shame. It’s great fun to see the effects of space weather rolling along on my computer screen as the data stream in.

Hi Stu,

Question. Is there a simple way to measure it for testing my environment before I dig deep into my pocket ?

I have time and nothing to do as a retiree ...

... and I have a 3D printer so I can print the necessary parts ...
