It seems spring is properly getting underway here. First blossoms are starting to show up and some of the birds that disappear for the winter are starting to make an appearance again. Good times!

Thanks Terry/Rainer.
Exactly. Having a little catchlight in the eye immediately livens up the subject.

Oh My G**!!!
Hawfinches!!! how did you spot let alone photograph them!!! they are on my list of birds to see before I die, and have been since I was 10 years old. I am running out of time and thought maybe they were in the bird book but didn't really exist, a bit like the Bittern and Bearded Tit
I can't tell you how envious I am

Hawfinches are tough little buggers to find and photograph indeed. Here in Belgium, there's a guy in the bird photography community that has built a hide on a piece of his land with a habitat around it meant to cater to birds (waterhole to drink/wash, vegetation to hide/nest in, a few feeders during the winter months,...). Every year during early spring, a flock of hawfinches makes an appearance there for a very brief period of time before disappearing again for the rest of the year. I was lucky enough to catch them at the right time this year (missed them the previous two).
I get the sentiment about the Bittern though. Never seen one up close. I know of two places where they're supposed to make a regular appearance and be quite easy to photograph. Just never when I'm there
PS: a young lady like yourself still has plenty of time to accomplish that goal

Re: First spring visitors
Exceptional pics Jochen...very nicely detailed
We are starting to get a few of the summer birds arriving here ans the snow gives way yo mud
Red Wing Blackbirds have been around the feeder and my wife said she has seen a few American Robins. There have been flocks of Canada Geese passing through and finding food in the fields. They were not impressed a week ago when we had a fresh 15cm of snow on the ground.

Re: First spring visitors
Thanks Brian.
Hope it properly clears up there soon enough. Funny how quickly that can suddenly turn. 2,5 weeks ago there was no bird to be seen here so to speak, right now migration is full swing already it seems and I've seen some birds flying through the garden with nesting material quite regularly.
Definitely puts me in a good mood
