Animation of AR2975 on the 23rd March 22 10.45 UT

Post by daniele_bonfiglio »

Dear all,
after some time I was able to process the pictures I took on the 23rd of March, and make an animation. In this animation, 20 minutes time is compressed in 1 second. There are 10 frames each one resulting from a stack of photos taken within a 2 minutes time interval.
I still have to process another 20 minutes of photos or so...
Best, Daniele

Dear all, thank you for the nice comments!
I have finalized my timelapse animation by adding 10 more frames. Now the animation covers 36 minutes of recordings. I have also rotated the image for a more natural appearance (now East is on top), added false colours, a text with minutes count and the Earth for reference to gauge the size of solar features. As in the original animation, the luminance inside the disk is inverted.
I like how the ejected plasma blobs "rain down" to the surface following magnetic field lines. In particular if you look carefully outside the disk to the right of the image there is a very faint trail of moving plasma making almost a closed loop! The tendrils of plasma waving from the active region just inside the limb are nice to see as well!

That's a really lovely final cut :movie it is always interesting that most plasma movement is usually downwards rather than the expected upwards :)

Hi Daniele,
Nice work there !
How many frames per video did you take ? I am also thinking of doing animations, perhaps over a longer time frame. I will start with a few frames to work out a workflow. Did you use Photoshop actions to process the frames ?

Thanks.

Magnus

Hi Magnus, thanks! By frames do you mean frames in the animation, not frames in the individual stacks, rights? This video is composed by 18 frames each one coming from the stack of around 1000 still shots from 2 minutes long individual captures. If you want to play with it, I am happy to share the link to the Photoshop file with the animation.

Thanks Daniele,

Yes, I meant how many frames did each video file did you use.
You animated 18 frames altogether over a space of about 34mins, 1 frame every 2 minutes.

I tried to get data from SDO and the other solar websites to try out my own animations and processing. I found it hard to get the original .fits files.

Does anyone know how to get them (I was prompted to download from a ftp address), but could not find a way to download it.
I think I downloaded one of their daily movies (.avi file) and processed that by extracting separate frames etc.

Daniele, I don't know how noise free the frames are, but I was thinking I might take say 100 to 250 frames per video, and do that maybe every 30 seconds for 2-5 hours ? that would be 5x60x2 videos = 600 videos (using avi files would reduce the space and obviously taking only a ROI would help reduce the file size).

Magnus, my still frames (I don't make videos!) are rather noisy and so I need to stack many of them to remove noise (at the expense of a bit of sharpness maybe, but not much!). But I think that most people in this forum do what you suggest and use not many frames per video!

Hello Daniele,

I came across a video on NAFE post processing by AZAstroguy. He uses a Lunt 100mm Double stack scope somewhere in North America.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=snbGqCmfHm0
Download NAFE from the nafe.zip file.

Thanks a lot, Magnus! I did not know this NAFE image processing method, it looks great! Perhaps this could be applied to the GONG H-alpha images as well?

Hi Daniele,

NAFE does not remove noise, but it enhances faint details. It was optimised for 171 Angstrom solar images, but I think it gives some enhancement in H-alpha wavelength as well. I tried it on my images and it was incredible the detail and proms shown up ! The noise it generates you will have to process out.

You can use noise reduction software or Photoshop etc. I think this is better than taking a long video file as we are interested in changes, not how sharp or grain free the image is so much. That is my opinion, but I have not done any solar animations yet.

Hi All,

I found this article on SDO data and how to read and obtain them. I have got the 10.5MB pdf file and will start to read this.

https://www.lmsal.com/sdodocs/doc/dcur/ ... zip/entry/

Best wishes.
