30th April 2022 M class flare

Post by Montana »

This morning I had some sunshine but it was very cloudy in between. There always seemed to be speckled mackerel cloud over the Sun and clear elsewhere.

Anyway, I tested out the TEC140 / TZ4 / SolarSpectrum / ASI174. Had a bit of a heart attack at the beginning as it wouldn't heat up to the set point. After unplugging and plugging back in it seemed to heat up :?

I tested initially with the 0.4x telecompressor and again the image is not straight, so it is not the C11 it is the imaging train. It is not the camera wobble either. I'll show an image at the end.

I managed to catch an M4.48 solar flare in AR12994 around 10:05-12UTC

Excellent, Alexandra. I was imagining at the same time, but only took one image of the flare. I never thought to create an animation. Nicely done :) and beautiful images.

As for the alignment, I have a laser (Howie Glatter) that fits in the eyepiece in place of the camera. I can lend it to you to properly check the alignment from the back through the objective and find where the issue is.

Alexandra,
I got the ping on SWL concerning this flare and others before the X-class one erupted. It was these flares that prompted me to set up a bit earlier than typical and I am sure glad I did!

Nice catch and wonderful post-flare loop!!

Spectacular catch, Alexandra ! I am always dreaming of catching a post flare loop and make an animation of it. The stills are great too.

Great work.

cool animation, i think now you narrowed down the issue.
As others noted before that baader fitting with the 3 thumbscrews looked suspicious. I would think that those require tuning for each session (if disassembled).

That's v exciting. A great demonstration of how much energy is dispensed with by just a small part of the sun within 15mins (from 1004 to 1019 UT). Once human beings figure out controllable fusion as a source of energy...!

I think I have seen something similar here only once, when in a post it was proposed to all to upload some of their most special captures.
The quality and the details are stunning despite the difficulties you had.
Thanks for sharing.

Hi Mark,
I use a Howie Glatter precision laser to align the various elements along the optical train on my 150. It’s surprising how small tweaks can make a big difference. I recon if everything is click locked/screwed together in Alexandra’s case, there may be an issue with lateral slop in the focuser(s) given the weight on the back of it, maybe?

I'm tempted by one for the HaT. The iterative approach of small gains is definitely the way with solar.

For collimation the auto-collimation method works well and is easy. Also you are using the magnification of the telescope standing 20 feet in front. The eye is good at lining up circles. Make a hole punch sized hole in a small piece of card. Draw a 1/4" cross on one side. Stand 10 feet+ in front of the OTA looking through the hole with the cross at the front. Start with bare OTA and focusser. You can tune the exit hole with eye piece barrel with field stop in it or move back and forwards if you have room.. You can find tune the centering by moving eye about and checking vignetting is symmetrical. Fortunately it's only a 6" is on a hill so I could stand across the road to do the same.

Cheers. Andrew.
