May 4 2022 Observations. M-Class flare observed in AR13004

Session time is from 15:22 until 17:40 UTC. Partly cloudy skies. Fair seeing. The temperature is 79F ( 26.1C )


Coronado SolarMax II 60 DS. 16x and 25x ( Ha )
I can see eleven areas of activity in the Ha chromosphere today. Three in the northern hemisphere, two numbered and eight in the southern hemisphere, six numbered.

A small plage can be seen in the NW quadrant very near the limb. It's associated with AR12997. Further east lies two plages oriented N-S in close proximity. The southern plage is AR13005. Very nice filaments are seen in the NE quadrant and NNW near the limb.

AR12999 is seen in the SW quadrant with a broad area of plage to the east of it's spot. Two filaments lie SE of AR12999. NE of AR12999 lies the small plage of AR13000. Two filaments lie due south of it. One is large and really easy. Still in the SW quadrant I can see the spot of AR13001 with it's plage east of the spot. Just north of AR13001 lies the small plage of AR13003. Just north of AR13003 lies the very active region of AR13004. Looking closely I can see a couple of spots within it and a small filament. The plage looks really bright and brightens as the session continues. I think " That's gotta be a flare " and check SWL. It turns out that it is! It's an M1.19 flare!! As of 17:00 UT it's now past peak and has dimmed a bit but is still quite bright. At max it looked like a zig-zag strike with a crook bending south then west in it's eastern side. By 17:40UT the plage has returned to normal appearance. Another small plage is seen across the CLM in the SE quad. Two plages are seen near the SE limb. The southernmost one is the newly numbered AR13006. A nice bowed filament lies SW of these two regions. Another really nice long filament lies SE of AR13004. I can also see some nice filaments in the far SE.

The mottles are visible across the disc.


Orion 70mm Solar Telescope. 25x and 50x ( WL )
I can see nine areas of activity on the white light photosphere today. Two in the northern hemisphere, one numbered and seven in the southern hemisphere with four of these being numbered systems.

AR12997 is visible only as a facula near the NW limb. I can see another patch of faculae near the NE limb.

AR12999 is easily visible in the SW quad as a single structured spot with associated faculae. Well SE of AR12999 lies the spot of AR13001. It's almost textbook symmetrical. Well to the SE of it lies a small pore that may belong to it or to another developing system. West of this one as shown by the SDO is another pore that's almost certainly connected to AR13001. I could not see that one. NE of AR13001 I spy another pore. It may be associated with AR13003. AR13004 has really grown in the last 24-36 hours! The westernmost spot in the group has grown larger and many of the pores are now fuzed together spots. Many are wrapped in irregular penumbrae. It's this growth that is sparking magnetic unrest in the area causing flares. The far SE quadrant shows 2 areas near the limb. The southernmost one is the new AR13006. I can see two spots within it among bright faculae. The northernmost one is but a smaller patch of faculae.

The fine solar granulation is visible today.

Nice report James. That active region seems busy, glad you got a view in. My continuum filter arrived today, it rained all day, now the sun has set it is clear :lol:

Mark,
Good luck on getting through the clouds to try that filter out. I find it indispensable. It increases contrast on photospheric features and removes any chromatic aberration present in achromatic refractors.

Today has been a day for M-class flares. They have been occurring in AR13004 and the new AR13006 near the SE limb. I've probably had five SWL alerts concerning them today. I got to observe one of them from start to finish.
