May 2 2022 Observations

Post by DeepSolar64 »

My session time is from 14:43 until 16:00 UTC. Clear skies. I have just above average seeing at first falling fast to just below average seeing by sessions end. The temperature is 75F at 16:00 UTC. I went out again at 17:30 UTC to find a pore that I did not see earlier. Seeing had gotten worse and the temperature has now risen to 78F ( 25.5C )

Coronado SolarMax II 90 DS. 32x and 50x ( Ha )
I can see ten areas of disturbance on the Ha disc with my visual view nearly matching but being a bit sharper than the KSO image being used to guide my observations. I see three in the northern hemisphere including two numbered regions and seven regions in the southern hemisphere including four numbered active regions.

In the NW quadrant I can see the plage of AR12997. Approaching the CLM in the NE quadrant I can see two plages quite close together. One is NNW of the other. A filament is seen just SW of this pair of plages. Two easy filaments are seen in the far NE as is another near the north pole.

A massive area of disturbance is seen straddling the Central Longitudinal Meridian ( CLM ) from east to west though most of it now lies in the SW quadrant. AR12999 is the westernmost of these and shows an easy spot with waves of plage to it's east. A thin filament is visible to it's SE. Another plage is visible to it's NE. AR13000 is located on the CLM just north of a splendid filament as a U shaped plage. SSE of it lies the spot of AR13001. The spot has plage east and southeast of it and a splendid filament west of it that shows nice detail in the scope. A filament can be seen in the plage to the spot's east too. Well NE of AR13001 is the brightest and easiest plage on the disc. That of AR13003. A thin filament lies just SE of it and another larger easier one well to it''s SE. A harder to find and see plage is seen east of AR13001 just NW of an inverted U shaped filament. Another line of puffy filaments is seen much further south. They are a part of a south polar crown going across the far south above the pole. The ones in the SW quadrant are smaller thinner and harder to see. In fact I can see almost all of the filaments seen on the KSO and GONG El Teide Ha images today.

There are three prominences that catch my eye today. One on the SW limb is shaped like a gloved hand with a void low center. A pointed flame catches my eye on the NE limb. It had a low center void too and a smaller southern neighbor. One on the eastern limb just south of the equator has a long southern extension and a shorter northern one. Several other smaller proms around the limb are noted.

The mottles are easily seen across the solar disc.

Celestron NexStar 102GT w/Altair wedge and Baader 540nm filter. 55x and 110x ( WL )
I can see thirteen areas on the 540nm photosphere, even more areas than I can see in Ha! Five in the northern hemisphere and eight in the southern hemisphere. Two numbered in the north and four numbered in the south.

I can see a line of three pores in the NW quadrant surrounded by faculae that is associated with AR12997. I can see another patch of faculae very close to the NW limb which is what is left visible of AR12996. It takes a close look to see. Three small spots are visible just east of the CLM. Two patches of faculae are visible near the NE limb.

AR12999 is visible as a structured spot in the SW quadrant. That is showing umbra and penumbra. A patch of faculae is seen well to it's SW. AR13001 is visible as a spot with a pore to it's east just east of the CLM. NW of it I can see a diffuse single pore that is associated with AR13000. Due east of AR13000 lies an arc of pores and a single small spot at the SW of the arc. I can count 14 in this group. It's associated with AR13003. Three more regions are seen further east in the SE quadrant. One is visible as two pores surrounded by faculae. East and SE of this one lies two more patches of faculae nearer the limb.

The fine solar granulation is easy to see but stops just short of true resolution into individual granules.

Carpe Diem!

James

Sounds like you had a good session James. Just cloud here, all day sadly...

I did buy a new continuum filter this weekend so that's probably more cloud for the foreseeable.

The Baader 540nm filter seems to be popular. Does anyone else make one?

Brian,
Are you outta power?

Jochen,
It was! Despite the Sun's rather placid appearance compared with last week, there's still a lot there to be seen upon close examination.

Thanks Maurits and you are welcome, Eric.

James
