May 10 2022. X1.51 Flare! That I missed :-(

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Session time is from 15:12 until 16:30 UTC. Skies are clear with seeing below average. The temperature is a warm 71F ( 21.6C )

Working over last night forces me to sleep late into the morning and I missed an X-Class flare that occurred in AR13006 at 13:55UTC. I rolled over about 25 minutes before that and went back to sleep. I should have checked my phone! So it's GONG to the rescue. Again...

Coronado SolarMax II 60 DS. 16x and 25x ( Ha )
Today I got four active regions in the Ha chromosphere, One in the northern hemisphere and three in the southern hemisphere. The three in the southern hemisphere have NOAA numbers.

AR13006 is seen as a bright plage seen straddling the SLM in the southern hemisphere. I can see some evidence of flaring here early in the session which is clearly shown in the KSO ha image. A nice filament lies SW of AR13006 and another near the SW limb. I missed an X1.51 flare that occurred here earlier. AR13007 is bright with a visible spot at it's western edge. A very noticeable bright projection of plage, possibly some flaring going on as suggested by the current KSO image, is located in the SE part of the system projecting south. I can barely see the tip of the plage of the departing AR13004 at the western limb, much as the KSO shows it.

The NE quadrant shows a plage near the limb. I can see a very light shading and texturing in places across the northern hemisphere, especially in the NW quadrant suggesting the northern belt of activity. Several nice filaments are seen here, especially a thin broken one in the NW quadrant.

The NE and NW limb shows some nice proms. I could see much of what the GONG image shows. A prom in the NE shows a branchoff to the south and the NW shows one with wide wings, the Angel Prom! that looked detached until I looked closer and switched from the 25mm eyepiece to the 16mm one. Two to the south reminds me of trees wrapped in vines being intertwined.

The mottles are easily seen across the disc.

Orion 70mm Solar Telescope. 25x and 50x ( WL )
I can see only three active regions on the white light photosphere today. One in the northern hemisphere and two in the southern hemisphere.

AR13006 is seen as a diagonal scattering of small spots/pores in the south central area of the disc. Oriented SE-NW. Two spots dominate the group. I would never have thought this small grouping would generate an X-Class flare. It may be growing! Time will tell. AR13007 in the far SE certainly shows a bit more to the eye. A structured spot in it's SW part and three intermingled spot/pore areas to the NE-SE. The top spot is the largest. I can see this group growing too.

A patch of faculae is seen just inside the NE limb. I see no spot or pores within it.

The fine granulation is difficult to see today.

Carpe Lumen!

James

I certainly don't function well without it. I take at least 7 hours to feel well.
