prominences of the 11th and 12th of may with the spectroscope

Post by ChrisHalpha2017 »

Hello guys,

I've been observing solar prominences for 24 years now with the technique described in the book "The Sun" of angelo Secchi (available for free on archive.org). The technique is very well described in english in "The sun" from Charles Young also available for free on the same website. My device is mix of coronograph and spectroscope (cf The Observer's Guide to Astronomy, Vol. 1 where there's a plan and also detailed instructions to build it).

So here are some pics taken with it on my Bresser 127/1200. I use a diffraction grating of 1200 grooves/mm and ASI 120MM.

thank you very much :)

At the time i started I bought the ha filter from Lumicon (1.5A) and it worked pretty well but within a year or two it started to fade a bit , so i decided to try another way to watch the prominences. The wide slit spectroscope is really a powerfull technique ; and when supplemented with the Lyot diaphragm the contrast is enhanced dramatically ( when the shy is clear) : the sky turns deep dark red to almost black in the vicinity of the sun's edge.

Nice result. Have you had any success with other wavelengths? I assume these are H-alpha.
Cheers.

To the mods: a little odd that this isn’t in the Spectroscopy forum ?

Yes these are in the H alpha line. I tried other lines like the D3 and Hb but in general proms arent very bright in these lines and dont show much details compared to the Ha.

I put this subject in solar chat observations as I dont do spectrography : i observe the solar prominences. And unlike spectroheliography I dont need to scan the sun. :)

Chris,
Very nice images and two really nice setups! My guess is the bright areas shown in your images that you have arrowed for doppler are shifted to the blue and coming toward you. They would appear bright also if you are looking down a length edgewise of prom(s) and seeing through a denser area. I see almost diamondlike bright points in proms from time to time.

That's my two cents....

Nice, Chris. I always find this type of approach enormously impressive.

@ Deepsolar : yes you're right and if I use a very narrow slit then I can measure the shift and hence the speed .

Macrospicules very often show doppler shift and i when i use the 1800 gr/mm grating it much easier to see them .

Thank you very much for your " encouragements" (sorry, i dont know yet how to say it properly in english) ; its very encouraging :)

Chris,
Keep stuff like this coming. This is exceptional work. I like the Bresser 127mm refractor too. In time I look to supersede the aperture of my Celestron 102mm achromat which is currently my largest solar capable telescope. The minimum I would consider is 127mm, preferably larger. Primarily for visual continuum when the seeing is good.

Hello James,

Thank you very much :)

I"m actually starting to enjoy my 127/1200 (I had a 102/1350 wich is great too so i switch between both when experimenting) but i"ve seen amazing results with the Bresser 152/1200!! I wanted to get that one but it was too heavy for my mount .

I've just recently bought an ASI 178MM and just tested it yesterday : no need to use a Barlow anymore with this camera and Bresser 127/1200! so theres also no more interference pattern and so on!! And as the chip is bigger I can capture larger part of the solar limb !

My Losmandy AZ8 is stout enough to hold either the Bresser 127 or 152. It'll also hold the Astro-Tech AT130EDT and Takahashi TOA130. The TOA150 is too heavy.

I look forward to seeing more of your work.

Wow!! these are absolutely incredible :bow :hamster: I've got a Baader Prominence viewer and that is great for visual prominences in a coronagraph style :)
